About door repair

Door repair in Singapore starts from $60 at SG QuickFix for door adjustment, hinge tightening, latch repair and handle or knob replacement. Most single-door repairs take 30 to 60 minutes. New parts such as hinges, handles and door closers are charged on top of labour, and the price is confirmed before work starts.

Most door problems have one of three causes: hinges that have worked loose, timber that has swollen in Singapore's humidity, or worn hardware such as handles, latches and closers. These can usually be fixed without replacing the door. We repair bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and main entrance doors.

Door repair in HDB flats, condos and landed homes

HDB flats

The main entrance door of an HDB flat is usually fire-rated and fitted with a door closer. HDB says the closer is a safety device that must not be removed, so a closer that slams or won't shut the door should be adjusted or replaced, not taken off. You need an HDB permit to replace a main door on a fire escape route, meaning one facing a staircase or lift lobby; the new door must be half-hour fire-rated with a door closer.

Condominiums

Hardware repairs rarely need management approval, but most condos set hours for drilling and may require a lift booking to bring in a new door. Check your house rules before a replacement. Condo doors often use heavy-duty hinges and hydraulic closers, which need careful adjustment so the door closes fully without slamming.

Landed homes

Solid timber doors in landed homes are heavier and more exposed to rain and sun, so they sag and swell more than doors in a flat. Hinge upgrades, edge trimming and frame repairs are more common, and an older frame may need re-fixing before new hinges will hold.

When can door repairs be done?

SG QuickFix is open 24 hours. In HDB flats, hDB restricts noisy renovation work, such as cutting tiles and heavy or excessive drilling, to weekdays between 9am and 5pm, with none on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays and the eves of major festivals. HDB also asks residents to avoid drilling between 10.30pm and 7am. Most door repairs need only a few small holes, if any.

Common problems

Door drops or scrapes the floor: usually loose or worn hinges, or hinge screws that have stripped the frame. Re-fixing into solid timber or replacing the hinge lifts the door back into place. Door sticks or won't close in wet weather: the timber has swollen in the humidity, or the frame has moved. The hinges are adjusted first, and the edge is trimmed only if the door still binds. Door won't latch, or the lock doesn't line up: once a door sags, the latch no longer meets the strike plate. Realigning the door or moving the strike plate fixes it. Handle is loose, droops or spins: the spindle or the spring inside the handle is worn. A new handle often costs less than repairing the old one. Door slams or won't close by itself: the door closer needs adjusting, or it is leaking oil and needs replacing. Cracked frame, split timber or peeling surface: common on the hinge side and the bottom edge of bathroom doors, where water collects. Squeaking hinges: dry or worn hinge pins. Lubricating may be enough; worn hinges are replaced. If the lock is jammed or you have lost the keys, Lock Replacement is the better service. If the door itself is beyond repair, a full replacement is quoted after measuring.

What the work covers

Each visit starts with a check of how the door hangs, swings and closes: the hinges, screws, frame, latch, strike plate and closer. We repair the cause rather than the symptom, for example re-securing a dropped hinge before trimming a door that only rubs because it has sagged. After the repair, the door is opened and closed several times to check that it swings freely, latches and locks.

  • Hinge & alignment repair
  • Closer & handle fix
  • Door slab replacement
  • Smooth operation test
  • Latch & strike plate realignment
  • Minor frame & timber repair

Pricing & conditions

Prices on the cards are starting prices per door. The final price depends on the door's type and weight, the condition of the frame and the parts needed. The price is confirmed before work starts, and if the job turns out to be different on site, we explain why and confirm the new price before continuing. Where a card shows "+ parts", "+ handle", "+ knob" or "+ closer", that part is charged on top of the labour price. A full door replacement is quoted after measuring.

Not included in the listed prices: a new door or frame (quoted separately), repainting or varnishing after a repair, and digital lock installation, which is covered under Lock Replacement.
