About lock replacement

Lock replacement in Singapore starts from $70 in labour at SG QuickFix for a standard lock, a cylinder, or a bedroom or bathroom lockset, with the new lock charged separately. Mortise locks start from $100, and digital lock installation on an existing door from $120. Most lock jobs take 30 to 90 minutes.

A lock usually needs replacing for one of four reasons: the keys have been lost or shared too widely, the mechanism is worn and sticks, the door has sagged so the bolt no longer lines up, or you want to upgrade to a digital lock. If the door has only dropped, Door Repair may solve the problem without a new lock.

Which type of lock do you have?

Lock typeWhere it is usedWhat gets replacedLabour from
Cylinder lockMain doors and gatesOnly the key cylinder; the lock body stays$70 + cylinder
Mortise lockMain doors; the lock case sits inside the door edgeThe lock case, or the whole set$100 + lock
Bedroom or bathroom locksetInternal doors, often with a turn button insideThe handle and latch set$70 + lock
Lever handle with locksetInternal and main doorsHandle and lock together$80 + parts
Digital lockMain doors, sometimes bedroomsA digital lock fitted to the existing door$120

Changing only the cylinder is the quickest and cheapest way to stop old keys working, as long as the rest of the lock is in good condition.

Can a digital lock be installed on an HDB main door?

Yes, if the lock is certified. Since 1 March 2024, SCDF requires any digital lock installed on a fire door to be certified for fire resistance. Most HDB main entrance doors are fire-rated, so check that the lock comes with a certificate for its brand and model before you buy it. SCDF also encourages homeowners with an uncertified digital lock installed before that date to replace it with a certified one.

HDB says the door closer on a fire-rated main door must not be removed, so a digital lock must work with the closer in place. Some locks need a larger cut-out or new holes in the door; that work is priced as a digital lock requiring modification, from $160.

Condos and landed homes

Condo main doors that open onto a common corridor may also be fire-rated, so check with your management before fitting a digital lock. Landed homes have a wider choice of locks, but solid timber doors and metal gates may need a different mounting kit or extra drilling.

Common problems

Key is hard to turn or sticks: dirt or wear inside the cylinder. Cleaning sometimes helps; a worn cylinder is replaced. Key turns but the door won't lock: the bolt no longer lines up with the strike plate, usually because the door has dropped. Adjusting the door or the strike plate may be enough. Handle is loose or droops: a worn spring or loose fixing screws inside the lockset. Lost keys or a change of tenant: a new cylinder stops the old keys from working. Bathroom or bedroom door locked from inside: the turn button or latch has jammed. The lockset is opened and replaced. Digital lock keeps beeping, drains batteries or won't unlock: often low batteries or a bolt rubbing on the strike plate, sometimes a failing unit. A faulty lock under warranty should go back to its brand. Old mortise lock worn out: the case or levers inside are worn. A matching replacement keeps the existing cut-out in the door.

What the work covers

We check the door, frame and existing lock first, then confirm whether a cylinder, a lockset or the whole lock needs replacing. New locks are fitted to the existing cut-outs where possible, so the door needs as little extra cutting as possible. Each lock is tested with every key or code from both sides, and the latch and bolt are checked against the strike plate.

Pricing & conditions

Prices on the cards are labour prices, from $70. The lock, cylinder or lockset is charged separately, as shown by "+ lock", "+ cylinder" or "+ parts" on each card. Digital lock installation starts from $120 for a door that suits the lock. If the door needs a bigger cut-out or new holes, the job is priced as a modification, from $160. Unusual locks and complex door modifications are quoted after we see them. The price is confirmed before work starts.

Not included in the listed prices: the lock, cylinder or digital lock itself, and repairs to the door or frame, which are covered under Door Repair.
