Can a TV be mounted on an HDB partition wall?

Yes, with the right anchors and bracket. HDB says the internal partition walls of BTO flats are Severe Duty grade drywall, and that with appropriate anchors the drywall can support common fixtures. HDB also leaves a set of sample anchors, from light to heavy duty, in the household shelter. Large TVs and swing-arm brackets put more load on the wall, so the fixing is chosen for the TV's weight and the bracket type.

Some flats have Ferrolite partition walls. HDB says Ferrolite walls take up to 50 kg per bolt, depending on the anchor, with bolts no longer than 50 mm, and that holes must not be drilled within 200 mm below ceilings or beams; drilling into Ferrolite is limited to about 22 mm deep. For walls in all flats, HDB limits fasteners to 6 mm in diameter and 40 mm in penetration depth.

Walls and areas to avoid

  • Household shelter walls: hacking is not allowed, and drilling into the inside face is limited to 50 mm deep, for non-metallic inserts and removable screws. HDB can ask for fixtures there to be removed within 48 hours.
  • Areas with concealed wiring: HDB asks owners to avoid the no-drill areas shown in HDB's guide drawing.
  • Feature-wall panels or false walls built during renovation, which may need fixing through to the solid wall behind.

When can TV mounting be done?

TV mounting involves drilling. In HDB flats, hDB restricts noisy renovation work, such as cutting tiles and heavy or excessive drilling, to weekdays between 9am and 5pm, with none on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays and the eves of major festivals. HDB also asks residents to avoid drilling between 10.30pm and 7am. Condos set their own work hours; check with your management office.

How long does TV mounting take?

A standard fixed or tilt bracket on a concrete or brick wall takes about 45 to 60 minutes. Large TVs, swing-arm brackets, partition walls, tile drilling and cable management add about 15 to 45 minutes.

Common problems

TV mounted too high: the most common regret. A good guide is the middle of the screen near eye level when seated. Mark the screen outline with tape and sit down to check before drilling. Wall type unknown: concrete, brick, drywall and Ferrolite need different anchors. Tapping the wall and checking the flat's floor plan help identify it. Bracket doesn't fit the TV: the bracket must match the TV's VESA hole pattern and weight. Check both before buying. Cables hanging below the TV: basic cable management keeps them tidy; hiding cables inside the wall is a bigger job. Moving the TV to another wall or home: the old bracket is removed and the holes can be patched under Wall Repair / Patching. Tiled or marble wall: needs the right drill bits and slow drilling to avoid cracking the surface. Swing-arm TV sagging: the bracket or anchors are overloaded or loosening and should be refixed before the TV falls.

What the work covers

We confirm the TV size, bracket and wall type, mark the height with you, and check for concealed wiring before drilling. The bracket is fixed with anchors suited to the wall and the TV's weight, then levelled, and the TV is hung and locked onto the bracket. Cables are tidied if cable management is booked, and drilling dust is cleared.
