Can You Mount a TV on an HDB Partition Wall? (Drywall Limits)

By SG QuickFixLast updated 6 min read

Quick answer

Yes, you can mount a TV on an HDB partition wall. New BTO flats use Severe Duty drywall, and HDB's Drywall User Guide lists televisions under heavy-duty anchors rated below 25 kg per point. Use those anchors on a fixed bracket, away from the strips above, below and beside sockets. SG QuickFix mounts a 44–55" TV from $80.

Can I mount a TV on an HDB partition wall?

Yes. An HDB partition wall can take a wall-mounted TV if you use heavy-duty cavity anchors and a suitable bracket.

HDB says the internal partition walls in new BTO flats are Severe Duty grade drywall: a metal framework with gypsum plaster panels on both sides and sound insulation inside. HDB uses it between bedrooms, and between the living room and bedrooms. Its MyNiceHome guide to new-flat features also says a set of sample anchors, light to heavy duty, is left in your household shelter for wall cabinets, television sets and other fixtures.

A hollow knock is normal for drywall; what matters is the anchor. If you'd rather not drill it yourself, see TV mounting prices for HDB walls.

Which wall do you have: drywall, Ferrolite, block or concrete?

In new BTO flats, bedroom and living-room partitions are usually drywall; some new flats use Ferrolite, and older flats usually have brick or block.

Knock to confirm: drywall sounds hollow, while Ferrolite, block and concrete sound solid. Ferrolite is two concrete panels with an insulating core. Structural walls and the household shelter are reinforced concrete.

How much weight can HDB drywall hold?

HDB's Drywall User Guide rates heavy-duty anchors at under 25 kg per fixing point, and lists televisions in that tier.

The HDB Drywall User Guide has a second, lighter tier: plasterboard plugs and self-drilling fixings take under 12 kg per point, for hooks, picture frames, small mirrors and shelves. The heavy-duty tier (E-Z Toggle and similar) also covers air-con units, bookshelves and cabinets.

Treat 25 kg as a ceiling, not a target, and don't multiply it by the number of screws. On a TV bracket, the top fixings take most of the pull.

Typical TV weights and what suits HDB drywall
TV sizeTypical weight without standOn HDB drywall
43"7–10 kgFine with 4 heavy-duty anchors
55"13–18 kgFine with 4 heavy-duty anchors
65"20–26 kgUsually fine on a fixed bracket with 4 or more anchors, ideally one into a stud
75" and above28–40 kgBetter on concrete or a reinforced partition

Add 2–5 kg for the bracket.

Ferrolite walls have their own HDB rules: drill about 22 mm deep, use bolts no longer than 50 mm, and allow 20 kg or 50 kg per bolt depending on the anchor: about 20 kg for a steel cavity anchor, and 50 kg for an anchor rod set in injection mortar. Anything heavier needs extra support.

Where must you not drill?

Avoid the strips above, below and beside sockets and switches, the top 200 mm of Ferrolite walls, and the shelter's outer face.

For flats with concealed wiring from HDB, HDB's sketch for drilling near concealed wiring marks no-drill strips that cross the whole wall. A 150 mm-wide strip runs from each socket, switch and heater point straight up to the ceiling and down to the floor, and another runs sideways from it. The strips widen to 300 mm for two accessories mounted together and 450 mm for three, and a 150 mm band runs below the ceiling. A TV point often sits right below the TV, so keep every bracket hole out of the vertical strip above it.

On Ferrolite walls, HDB says not to drill within 200 mm below the ceiling or a beam, and to drill only about 22 mm deep.

The household shelter is a poor TV wall: SCDF allows only shallow inside-face fixings, removable within 48 hours of notice, and no drilled fixings on the outside face.

For the wider rules, see can I drill HDB walls; for timing, see HDB drilling hours.

How do you mount a TV on an HDB partition wall?

Use heavy-duty cavity anchors and a fixed or low-profile tilt bracket, and keep every hole out of the wiring strips.

  1. Check the TV's weight without stand on its spec sheet, and add the bracket's weight.
  2. Mark the bracket position, keeping every hole out of the strips above and beside the TV point.
  3. Scan with a cable and stud detector, and catch a metal stud with one fixing where you can.
  4. Drill a small pilot hole. On drywall, the bit breaks into a cavity after a short depth.
  5. Fit heavy-duty cavity anchors from HDB's sample set or the same type, never the bracket's plastic plugs or concrete bolts.
  6. Use every bracket hole, level the plate, and tighten firmly without crushing the board.

Keep each fixing within HDB's limit of 6 mm diameter and 40 mm penetration depth; long spring-toggle bolts may exceed it.

Skip full-motion arms on plain drywall: pulled out, they lever the top anchors out of the gypsum. Use a concrete wall or plywood backing instead.

Hairline cracks or a bulge around the top fixings are early warnings. Take the TV down before it leans forward.

Should you mount the TV yourself or call a pro?

A small TV on a fixed bracket is a fair DIY job. A big TV, a swing arm or an unclear wall is worth handing over.

SG QuickFix mounts a TV up to 43" from $70 and a 56–65" TV from $100, on concrete, brick or partition walls. Basic cable management is an add-on (+$20), and fitting a bracket you already own is included. For an accurate price, send a photo of the wall with the power point, plus your TV model and bracket type. For every size tier, see TV mounting cost in Singapore or the full handyman price list for Singapore.

The same anchors hold cabinets and heavy mirrors; see shelf and mirror installation.
