Why do power sockets burn?

A socket burns when a connection overheats: a loose wire behind the faceplate, worn contacts that grip plugs poorly, or a heavy load such as a heater or kettle running for a long time, often through a multi-way adaptor. A 13A socket can supply about 3,000 watts in total, so two high-power appliances on one socket can overload it. Brown marks, a melted plug or a burning smell mean the socket should be switched off and replaced.

What are the rules for power sockets in Singapore?

Common problems

Socket has no power: a tripped MCB, a loose connection, or a fault further along the circuit. Burn marks or a burning smell: an overheating connection. Stop using the socket at once. Sparks when plugging in: a tiny spark can be normal, but repeated or large sparks point to worn contacts. Plugs fall out or feel loose: the socket's contacts are worn. Socket is hot to the touch: overloading or a loose connection. Cracked faceplate: replace it, since live parts may be exposed. Not enough sockets: adding power points is safer than relying on extension cords and multi-way adaptors.

What the work covers

We switch off and isolate the circuit, check the wiring behind the socket for heat damage, and fit a new shuttered socket that carries the SAFETY Mark. Connections are tightened, and the socket is tested for correct polarity and earthing before power is restored. New power points are surface-mounted, with the wiring run along the wall, unless concealed wiring has been quoted.
