Lock Replacement

Digital Lock Installation with Door Modification

When a digital lock doesn't fit the existing cut-out, installation with door modification starts from $160 at SG QuickFix. The mortise pocket is enlarged or re-cut, new holes are drilled for the panels, and old holes are covered where possible. Most jobs take two to three hours. Cutting a fire-rated door may affect its rating, so check with the lock brand first.

Task guide

When this may be needed

  • The digital lock's mortise body is larger than the old lock's.
  • The new panels need through-holes in different positions.
  • The door is thicker or thinner than the lock's standard range.
  • The old lock left holes that the new panels don't cover.
  • The door's handle direction or backset doesn't match the lock.

What the team does

The technician compares the lock's template with the door and marks what has to change. The mortise pocket in the door edge is enlarged, or holes are drilled to suit the lock's panels and spindle. Where the old lock leaves exposed holes, cover plates are used if they suit the lock. The lock is then fitted, the strike plate is re-cut or moved, and the lock is set up and tested with the door closer in place.

Included in this price

  • Template marking and checking against the door
  • Enlarging the mortise pocket or drilling new holes
  • Fitting the lock and adjusting the strike plate
  • Setting up and testing the lock

Limits & price factors

The digital lock and any cover plates are not included. Repainting the door, frame replacement and metal-door modifications are quoted separately.

The price depends on how much the door has to change. Solid timber doors are quicker to cut than doors with steel reinforcement. Gates and metal doors are quoted after photos.
