About furniture assembly

Furniture assembly in Singapore starts from $40 at SG QuickFix for a small side table or stool. Desks start from $50, bed frames from $70 and standard wardrobes from $90, while a large IKEA PAX wardrobe starts from $150. Most single items take 30 minutes to 2 hours; large wardrobes take longer.

We assemble flat-pack furniture from IKEA, Taobao, Shopee, local furniture shops and other retailers, following the maker's instructions. Tall wardrobes and bookcases are fixed to the wall where the instructions call for it, so they can't tip over.

Is IKEA's assembly service cheaper than a handyman?

It depends on the price of the item. IKEA Singapore charges 10% of the product's original retail price for assembly, plus a $35 call-out fee when assembly is a separate trip after delivery. IKEA also says it does not assemble on false ceilings or partition walls, and its assembly service is only for truck deliveries.

For example, a wardrobe that retails at $1,000 costs $100 to assemble through IKEA. On this page, a standard wardrobe starts from $90 and a large PAX wardrobe from $150, so compare the two for your item. A handyman also suits furniture you collected yourself, pieces from other shops, and items that must be fixed to a partition wall.

Assembling furniture in HDB flats, condos and landed homes

HDB flats

Tall wardrobes and bookcases should be fixed to the wall. HDB says BTO partition walls are Severe Duty grade drywall, and that with appropriate anchors the drywall can support common fixtures such as cabinets; a set of sample anchors is left in the household shelter. Household shelter walls must not be hacked, and only shallow fixings are allowed on their inside face, so tall furniture is anchored to another wall where possible.

Condominiums

Check whether your management needs a lift booking for large deliveries, and keep the boxes until assembly is finished in case a part is missing. Large wardrobes are best assembled in the room where they will stand, because they may not fit through the doorway once built.

Landed homes

Landed homes have more space but often narrow staircases and landings. Large wardrobes and bed frames are carried up in their boxes and assembled in the room where they will be used.

Common problems

Missing or damaged parts: everything is checked against the parts list before assembly starts, so replacements can be claimed from the seller early. Steps done in the wrong order: one panel fitted the wrong way round can mean taking the whole item apart again. Wobbly or uneven furniture: usually loose cam locks, a skipped bracket or an uneven floor. Tightening fixings and levelling the feet fixes most cases. Wardrobe doors that don't close evenly: the hinges need adjusting once the wardrobe is standing in its final place. Tall furniture that could tip over: wardrobes and bookcases should be fixed to the wall, especially with young children at home. Furniture that won't fit through the door or up the stairs: dismantling and reassembly gets it into the room. Moving house: items are dismantled, their fixings kept together, and reassembled at the new home.

What the work covers

We check all parts against the instructions before starting, assemble each item in the room where it will stand, and fix tall items to the wall with anchors suited to the wall type. Doors, drawers and hinges are adjusted so they open and close evenly. Packaging is collected and the area is cleared when the job is done.

Pricing & conditions

Prices on the cards are per item and start from $40. The final price depends on the item's size, the number of parts and drawers, and whether it needs fixing to the wall. Complex or custom furniture is quoted from photos: send the product name or a photo of the instructions on WhatsApp. The price is confirmed before work starts.

Not included in the listed prices: delivering the furniture, removing or disposing of old furniture, and carpentry that needs parts cut or altered on site.
