Digital Lock Battery Dead? What to Do, and When to Replace It

By SG QuickFixLast updated 7 min read

Quick answer

If your digital lock battery dies, hold a 9V battery to the outside contacts or plug in a USB power bank (depending on model), enter your PIN, then replace every AA battery inside. No power point? Use the mechanical key. If fresh batteries don't revive it, SG QuickFix fits a replacement lock on Singapore HDB doors from $120.

What do I do if my digital lock battery dies?

Wake the lock from outside with a 9V battery or a USB power bank, enter your PIN, then change every battery inside. Most locks sold in Singapore have an emergency power point and a mechanical key on the outside unit. Try them in this order:

  1. Find the emergency power point on the outside unit, usually two metal contacts or a USB port near the bottom.
  2. Hold a 9V battery's terminals firmly on the contacts, or plug in a power bank. Convenience stores usually sell 9V batteries.
  3. Keep the power connected while you enter your PIN or fingerprint and unlock.
  4. If the lock won't wake, use the mechanical key.
  5. Once inside, replace all the batteries in the inside unit straight away.
  6. If you have no key and no power point works, call a locksmith. Don't force or drill the lock.

If the lock stays dead on a fresh 9V battery held firmly on the contacts, or on a second power bank, the lock itself may be faulty. See digital lock replacement prices.

Does every digital lock use a 9V battery for emergencies?

No: some digital locks take a 9V battery on outside contacts, while others take a 5V power bank through a micro-USB port. The table shows what each maker states for a popular model.

Battery type, stated life and emergency power by model, from each maker's manual or product page (checked 1 Oct 2026)

Other models vary, so check your manual and keep the matching cable.

How often do you need a digital lock battery replacement?

Plan on a digital lock battery replacement every 9 to 12 months, and check for leaks every 6 months, as Samsung advises. Manufacturers rate their locks at 10 to 18 months (Yale and Samsung at about 10 uses a day), but Yale's own guide says 3 to 12 months is typical in real homes. igloohome advises a change every 8 to 10 months to prevent leaks.

Don't wait once the warning starts. Yale says its app alerts give weeks of notice, but Samsung's SHS-P718 manual says to replace all 8 batteries within 1 week of the first alarm, or the lock may stop suddenly.

Which batteries should you use?

Use fresh alkaline AA batteries, all from one pack. Rechargeable NiMH batteries run at 1.2V, which Yale says makes the lock misread its power as critically low. Yale's YDM4109A manual rules out rechargeables, and Samsung and igloohome also specify alkaline. Locks with a built-in rechargeable pack take only the maker's pack.

How do I change digital lock batteries?

Open the battery cover on the inside unit, fit a full set of fresh alkaline AA, then test the lock with the door open.

  1. Keep the door open so you can't lock yourself out while testing.
  2. Slide off or unscrew the battery cover on the inside unit.
  3. Remove every old battery, even ones that still seem fine.
  4. Check the contacts and wipe off dust or light corrosion with a dry cloth.
  5. Fit new alkaline AA batteries from one pack, matching the + and − marks.
  6. Close the cover, then test your PIN, fingerprint and auto-lock before shutting the door.

Never mix old and new batteries, or two brands. Old batteries go to an e-waste bin, not the rubbish chute.

Why does my digital lock battery drain so fast?

Fast drain usually comes from Wi-Fi, heavy use, the wrong batteries, heat and humidity, or a door that makes the bolt work harder:

  • Wi-Fi and weak signal: Samsung and Philips both say a poor connection increases power use. Turn Wi-Fi off if you don't use the app.
  • Heavy use: ratings assume about 10 uses a day.
  • The wrong batteries: rechargeable, old or cheap batteries read low sooner, and Yale says mixed batteries are more likely to leak.
  • Heat and humidity: Yale says heat speeds up discharge and moisture corrodes the battery contacts.
  • A door that binds: if you must push, lift or slam the door to lock it, the motor strains every time. A door that doesn't close fully can make auto-lock retry. A door alignment or closer adjustment often fixes this.
  • A faulty board: if new alkaline batteries show low within a few weeks and nothing above applies, suspect the lock's circuit board.

What if new batteries don't fix the lock, and what does it cost?

Check the battery direction, clean the contacts and reboot the lock; if it stays dead, it needs repair or replacement. Use a reboot, not a factory reset: Häfele's reset button, or a double press of Philips' reset button, deletes every PIN and fingerprint. If the lock is under warranty, go to the brand first.

Out of warranty, a lock with a dead board, motor or leak damage is usually replaced rather than repaired. SG QuickFix fits a replacement digital lock on an existing door from $120. If the new lock doesn't match the old cut-outs, fitting a digital lock requiring modification costs from $160. Going back to a keyed mortise lock costs from $100 plus the lock. If the drain came from the door, a door alignment adjustment costs from $60.

On a fire-rated main door, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) requires any digital lock installed since 1 Mar 2024 to be certified for fire resistance, rated at least as high as the door (SCDF: Digital locksets on fire-rated doors); see digital locks on HDB fire-rated doors. The digital lock installation cost guide and the full handyman price list for Singapore cover other options.

For an accurate price, send a photo of both sides of the lock, the model label on the inside unit, and a short video of what happens when you enter your PIN. More options are on the lock replacement service page.
