About circuit breaker / db services

Circuit breaker and DB box services in Singapore start from $100 at SG QuickFix for distribution board troubleshooting. Replacing an MCB starts from $120, an RCBO from $150 and an RCCB from $180. Minor DB rectification starts from $150, a DB rewire from $300 and full distribution board replacement from $450. Full rewiring is quoted after a site survey.

MCB, RCCB or RCBO: what's the difference?

DeviceWhat it protects againstWhen it tripsReplacement from
MCB (miniature circuit breaker)Overload and short circuit on one circuitToo much current, or a short circuit$120
RCCB (residual current circuit breaker)Earth leakage on the circuits it coversCurrent leaking to earth, a shock risk$180
RCBOBoth, on a single circuitOverload, short circuit or earth leakage$150

Fitting RCBOs gives each circuit its own earth-leakage protection, so one faulty appliance trips only its own circuit instead of the whole home.

Is an RCCB required by law in Singapore?

Yes. From 1 July 2023, all homes in Singapore must have an RCCB, with a two-year grace period, which ended in 2025, for homes that didn't have one. RCCBs have been required in new installations since July 1985, so the rule mainly affects homes still on their original pre-1985 wiring. The penalty for not having one is a fine of up to $5,000. Homeowners whose RCCB is faulty are not penalised, but are encouraged to test it regularly and have a licensed electrical worker replace it if it fails.

Who can work on your DB box?

Replacing breakers, rewiring and replacing the distribution board are electrical installation work, which Singapore's regulations require a licensed electrical worker (LEW) to carry out. After new wiring is installed, the LEW applies to SP Group for inspection and testing. HDB advises replacing a flat's wiring when its lifespan is over or it is worn out, and estimates that PVC cable lasts about 25 years.

Common problems

RCCB trips often: earth leakage from an appliance or wiring fault, or an ageing RCCB that has become oversensitive. RCCB doesn't trip when its test button is pressed: the RCCB is faulty and must be replaced. MCB trips when certain appliances run: the circuit is overloaded or has a short circuit. Burning smell, buzzing or heat at the DB box: loose connections or a failing breaker. Switch off the main switch if it is safe to do so and call for help. Old board with fuses or no RCCB: common in homes still on pre-1985 wiring, which now must have an RCCB. Adding circuits for new appliances: the board may need spare ways or an upgrade. Wiring older than about 25 years: HDB advises replacing wiring that has reached the end of its lifespan.

What the work covers

We inspect the distribution board for heat damage, loose connections and the condition of each breaker, then test the RCCB and the circuits it protects. Faulty breakers are replaced with ones of the correct rating, connections are tightened, and circuits are labelled where needed. After any work on the board, the RCCB and each circuit are tested before power is restored.

Pricing & conditions

DB troubleshooting starts from $100. Breaker replacement starts from $120 for an MCB, $150 for an RCBO and $180 for an RCCB. Minor rectification starts from $150, a DB rewire from $300 and a full board replacement from $450, depending on the number of circuits. Full rewiring is quoted after a site survey. The price is confirmed before work starts.

Not included: faults in SP Group's supply or meter, increasing the flat's electrical loading, HDB permit applications, and repairs to wiring outside the DB box unless quoted.
