About electrical troubleshooting / power trip
Electrical troubleshooting in Singapore starts from $80 at SG QuickFix for diagnosing a power trip, partial power failure, dead socket, lighting circuit fault or appliance-related trip. Circuit fault tracing starts from $100, and complex faults in concealed wiring are quoted after diagnosis. Most faults are found within 30 to 90 minutes.
What should you do when the power trips?
- Check whether it's only your home. If your neighbours are also out, it is likely a supply fault: call SP Group's 24-hour hotline on 1800 778 8888.
- Open your distribution board (DB box) and see which switch has tripped: the main switch, the RCCB, or one of the smaller MCBs.
- Unplug or switch off appliances on the affected circuits, especially water heaters, ovens, kettles and anything used in wet areas.
- Switch the tripped device back on once. If it trips again straight away, leave it off and get the circuit checked.
- If it holds, switch appliances back on one at a time. The one that trips it again is the likely culprit.
Why does the power trip at night or when it rains?
An RCCB trips when it detects current leaking to earth, which could otherwise give someone a shock. Moisture makes small leaks worse, so faults often show up during heavy rain, on humid nights, or when a water heater, washing machine or outdoor socket is in use. Appliances that switch on by themselves, such as a fridge compressor or a water heater on a timer, can also trigger a trip while you sleep.
Who can repair electrical faults in Singapore?
Singapore's electrical regulations require electrical installation work, such as wiring and replacing RCCBs, to be carried out by a licensed electrical worker (LEW); see the Energy Market Authority's guidance on engaging licensed workers. Faults in SP Group's supply are handled through SP Group's hotline.
Some town councils list contractors for in-flat electrical jobs such as resetting a tripped breaker, but they act only as a referral: the arrangement and payment are private between you and the contractor, and you are free to choose your own.

Common problems
Whole home power trips: an earth leakage fault on one circuit tripping the RCCB, or an overloaded main switch. Power trips when it rains: water getting into an outdoor socket or light, or into a wall where a pipe is leaking. Trips when one appliance is used: a faulty water heater, oven, kettle or washing machine. Half the home has no power: one MCB has tripped, or there is a loose connection on that circuit. One socket has no power: a loose connection at that socket, or a fault further back along the circuit. Lights flicker or fail on one circuit: a loose connection, a failing switch or a lighting circuit fault. Burning smell at a socket or switch: overheating from a loose connection. Switch that circuit off and get it checked.
What the work covers
We isolate the circuits at the distribution board and test each one to find where current is leaking or where the circuit is broken. Appliances are checked separately to rule them in or out. Once the cause is found, we explain it and the price of the repair before fixing it, then test the RCCB and the affected circuits before restoring power.

Pricing & conditions
Diagnosis starts from $80 and covers finding the cause of a power trip, partial power failure, dead socket, lighting fault or appliance-related trip. Tracing a fault through a circuit starts from $100. The repair is quoted after diagnosis, because it depends on what is found; complex faults in concealed wiring are quoted once the fault has been located. The price is confirmed before work starts.
Not included: faults in SP Group's supply, appliance repairs, full rewiring (see Circuit Breaker / DB Services), and parts that need replacing after diagnosis, unless agreed.
FAQs
At SG QuickFix, power trip diagnosis starts from $80, and tracing a fault through a circuit from $100. The repair is quoted once the cause is found, since it may be as simple as a faulty appliance or as involved as concealed wiring.
If your neighbours are also out, call SP Group's 24-hour hotline on 1800 778 8888. If only your home is affected and the RCCB or an MCB keeps tripping, the fault is inside your flat and needs an electrician.
An RCCB trips when current leaks to earth, usually from a faulty appliance, water in a socket or light, or damaged wiring. Unplug everything, reset the RCCB, then plug items back in one at a time. If it trips with nothing plugged in, the wiring needs checking.
Night-time trips are often caused by appliances that switch on by themselves, such as a fridge compressor or a water heater on a timer, or by moisture on humid nights. Note which appliances were running when it tripped, as that helps the diagnosis.
No. An RCCB that trips repeatedly is warning of a leak to earth that could cause a shock or a fire. Reset it once with appliances unplugged; if it trips again, leave it off and have the circuit checked.
Most power trips and dead circuits are diagnosed within 30 to 90 minutes. Faults in concealed wiring, or faults that come and go, can take longer, because the circuit has to be tested section by section.
Resetting a tripped switch is something you can do yourself. Repairing wiring, sockets or the DB box is electrical installation work, which Singapore's regulations require a licensed electrical worker to carry out.
