Taobao Furniture Assembly in Singapore: Manuals and Missing Parts

By SG QuickFixLast updated 7 min read

Quick answer

Yes. A handyman in Singapore can assemble Taobao furniture even when the manual is only in Chinese, as long as the panels and main fittings arrived. Count the panels and hardware against the parts list first, and photograph any damage. SG QuickFix assembles small items such as a stool from $40 and quotes custom pieces from photos.

Can a handyman assemble Taobao furniture in Singapore?

Yes. A handyman can assemble most Taobao flat-pack in Singapore, even with a Chinese-only manual, provided the panels and main fittings arrived.

Taobao furniture differs from IKEA's wordless manuals and numbered parts. A Taobao manual may be in Chinese with diagrams, diagrams only, or missing altogether. Hardware bags are often unlabelled, or lettered to a parts list you have to decode. Most wardrobes, cabinets and shoe racks are particleboard or MDF held by cam locks and wooden dowels, while solid-wood pieces use bolts. Pre-drilled holes sometimes don't line up.

This adds time, and a missing fitting can stop the job halfway. See furniture assembly prices for SG QuickFix's rates by item. IKEA's own service is compared in IKEA assembly fee in Singapore.

What should you check when Taobao furniture arrives?

Count everything and photograph any damage before building; a seller claim is easier while the cartons are still packed.

  1. Count the cartons against your order. Labels such as 1/3, 2/3 and 3/3 show how many belong to one item.
  2. Photograph each carton, its label and any dents or tears before opening further.
  3. Lay the panels out flat and match each one to the manual's diagram.
  4. Find the parts list, 配件清单 or 五金清单, and count every hardware bag against it.
  5. Search the foam and carton flaps before calling a part missing.
  6. Keep the cartons until the item is built and checked.

If something is missing or broken, message the seller in the Taobao app straight away with your photos. Photos taken before assembly make a claim easier; transit damage is harder to prove once the item is built.

How do you read a Chinese parts list?

Match the drawings first, then translate the names; most Taobao parts lists use the same small set of hardware terms.

Common terms on Taobao furniture parts lists
ChineseEnglishWhat to look for
安装说明书Assembly manualThe fold-out sheet of diagrams
配件清单 / 五金清单Parts list / hardware listThe table of lettered bags and quantities
螺丝ScrewUsually several lengths; don't mix them
三合一 / 偏心件Cam lock / cam headRound metal disc you turn with a screwdriver
连接杆Cam boltPin that screws into one panel and locks into the cam
预埋螺母Threaded insertSleeve pressed into the panel for the cam bolt
木榫Wooden dowelShort fluted wooden pin
铰链 / 合页Hinge铰链 usually means a cup hinge on cabinet doors
滑轨Drawer slideMetal runner, left and right pair
层板托Shelf pinSmall peg that holds a loose shelf
背板Back panelThin board fixed with nails or slotted in
调节脚Levelling footScrew-in foot for uneven floors
膨胀螺丝Wall plug / expansion boltFor fixing to the wall
防倾倒Anti-tipStrap or bracket that stops tipping

Google Translate's camera mode can read a parts list: point it at the text, or import a photo. Download Chinese in the app so it works offline, and expect small or blurry print to mistranslate. When a translation and a drawing disagree, trust the drawing. Once each bag is identified, label it in English with masking tape.

What if parts are missing or damaged?

Missing standard screws or dowels can usually be replaced locally; a missing panel or special fitting needs a claim to the seller first.

Usually replaceable with standard hardware:

  • Wood screws of a common length
  • Wooden dowels and shelf pins
  • A cam head or cam bolt, if the size is standard
  • Levelling feet

Needs the seller to send a replacement:

  • A panel, door or drawer front, since sizes and colours are specific
  • A cracked or chipped panel, or peeling edge banding
  • A matched pair of drawer slides or a specific hinge
  • A proprietary connector or gas strut for a storage bed

A handyman can often build the rest and leave a gap for the part still coming, but a missing side panel or base stops the job. A photo of the parts list shows the installer whether standard hardware will do.

Does a tall Taobao wardrobe need anchoring in an HDB flat?

Yes. Tall wardrobes, bookcases and chests of drawers should be fixed to the wall so they can't tip onto a child climbing them.

Singapore's Consumer Product Safety Office advises choosing bookcases and dressers with anti-tipping restraint kits, and asking the retailer or buying a suitable kit if none is provided. Many Taobao pieces arrive without one, and the wall plugs in the bag may not suit your wall.

HDB flats mix wall types. In most new BTO flats, bedroom partitions are drywall and need a heavy-duty drywall anchor. Some new flats use Ferrolite partitions, two thin concrete panels with an insulating core, which have their own HDB drilling limits. Solid concrete walls take masonry plugs. Ceiling height is covered in the guide to PAX wardrobe assembly in an HDB flat, and permitted times in HDB drilling time rules.

Should you assemble Taobao furniture yourself or book a handyman?

Small, simple Taobao items are fair DIY; wardrobes with doors, storage beds and anything anchored to a partition wall suit a handyman.

DIY often takes two to three times as long. SG QuickFix prices each item separately; the full handyman price list for Singapore covers other jobs.

Safe to DIY if…Call a professional if…
The item is small and freestanding, like a stool or side tableIt's a wardrobe with hinged or sliding doors that need levelling
The parts list is complete and the diagrams are clearParts are missing, there's no manual, or the fittings are unusual
You can fix it to a solid concrete wall with the right plugsThe restraint must go into a drywall or Ferrolite partition, or you're unsure of the wall
You have one item and a free afternoonYou have several items, a storage bed with gas struts, or a move to handle
You can pick a wall that isn't the shelter wallThe only free wall is the household shelter wall: don't anchor furniture to it, so choose another spot

The most common DIY mistakes are mixing the hardware bags, fitting a panel upside down, power-driving screws into particleboard, and leaving cam heads half-turned. Others are nailing the back panel on before the frame is square, building a tall wardrobe flat so it can't stand under the ceiling, and skipping hinge adjustment and the anti-tip restraint.

For an accurate price, send the Taobao listing link or photos of the manual and parts list (with any missing items circled), the carton count, and a photo of the wall the item will stand against.
