Can a leaking tap be repaired instead of replaced?

Often, yes. A dripping tap usually needs a new washer or ceramic cartridge, and a leaking handle needs new seals. Replacement makes more sense when the tap body is cracked or heavily corroded, or when parts are no longer available.

Do I need a licensed plumber to replace a tap?

No. PUB lists replacing or removing any tap or mixer as simple plumbing work that a handyman without a licence may do. Laying, altering or repairing the water supply pipes must be done by a PUB-licensed plumber.

How do I turn off the water before changing a tap?

Most HDB and condo kitchen and basin taps have an angle valve under the sink: turn it clockwise to close. If there is no valve, close the stopcock at your PUB water meter, which shuts off water to the whole home.

How long does it take to replace a tap?

Most basin, bib and kitchen taps take 30 to 60 minutes to replace, including fitting new hoses where needed. Mixer taps can take up to about 75 minutes, especially wall-mounted ones.

Why is my new tap leaking?

A new tap usually leaks because a washer or seal isn't seated properly, a hose connection isn't tight, or a threaded joint wasn't sealed. Occasionally the cartridge is faulty. These are quick to fix once the source of the leak is found.

Can I buy my own tap?

Yes. Check that the new tap fits your sink or basin: the tap-hole size, the spout's reach and whether it needs one or two water inlets. Send a photo of the old tap and the new one on WhatsApp if you are unsure.

Taps in HDB flats, condos and landed homes

HDB flats: kitchen and basin taps usually connect through an angle valve and a flexible hose under the sink, so a tap replacement often also needs a new hose, which is charged as a part. HDB notes that a tap usually leaks when its washer is worn. To stop the water, close the angle valve, or the stopcock at your PUB water meter if there is no valve.
Condos: wall-mounted and concealed mixers and branded fittings are common, and some need matching cartridges from the same brand. Have the brand and model ready if you know it.
Landed homes: outdoor bib taps for gardens and car porches wear faster in sun and rain, and older homes may have galvanised pipes that need care when a tap is unscrewed.

Common problems

Tap drips when closed: a worn washer in a pillar tap, or a worn ceramic cartridge in a mixer or quarter-turn tap. Water leaks from the handle or spindle: worn O-rings or seals around the spindle. Leak at the base of the spout: a worn swivel seal on kitchen taps that turn. Water under the sink: a loose or cracked flexible hose, or a leaking angle valve. Weak flow from one tap: a blocked aerator or debris in the cartridge. Cleaning the aerator often fixes it. Handle is stiff or hard to turn: limescale or a worn cartridge. Tap is loose on the basin or sink: the fixing nut underneath has worked loose.
