Why is my shower pressure low?

Low pressure in one shower is usually local: a clogged shower head or hose, a partly closed valve, or a worn mixer cartridge. If every tap in the home is weak, the cause may be in the supply.

In a written reply to Parliament in May 2026, the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment said PUB supplies water directly to fittings up to 25 metres above mean sea level; higher floors are fed from rooftop tanks maintained by town councils. Most low-pressure cases come from local issues such as stopped pumps, partly closed service valves or blockages in older pipes and fittings. HDB advises informing your town council if low pressure is caused by a faulty booster pump.

Rain showers need good pressure. On higher floors, or with an instant water heater, a large rain shower head may feel weaker than expected.

Do you need a licensed plumber for shower work?

No. PUB lists replacing any tap or mixer, shower hose or showerhead as simple plumbing work that a handyman without a licence may do, along with installing a shower tray or enclosure. Moving or extending the supply pipes, for example to raise a concealed mixer, is regulated water service work for a PUB-licensed plumber.

Common problems

Shower hose leaks at the ends or splits: worn washers or an aged hose. Shower head drips after it is turned off: a worn mixer cartridge or washer, or limescale. Weak spray: clogged nozzles in the shower head, a kinked hose or a partly closed valve. Water too hot or too cold, or the temperature jumps: a worn mixer cartridge, or a water heater problem (see Water Heater Services). Mixer leaks from the handle or body: worn seals or a worn cartridge. Water leaking behind the wall: a concealed mixer or pipe leak (see Water Leak Repair). Shower holder or slide rail is loose: its fixings have worked loose.

What the work covers

We check the flow and pressure, find the part causing the problem, and replace the hose, head, set, mixer or rain shower as needed. New fittings are installed with fresh washers and seals and levelled on the wall. The shower is run hot and cold to check the temperature control and that every joint stays dry.
