Grab bars: HDB EASE or private installation?

HDB's Enhancement for Active Seniors (EASE) programme subsidises grab bars and other fittings for eligible HDB households with elderly family members. Check your eligibility on HDB's EASE page first, because the subsidy can make it the cheaper option.

Private installation suits households that aren't eligible or need grab bars in extra positions. A grab bar must be fixed into solid wall with anchors that can take a person's full weight; a towel rail is not a substitute.

Where should grab bars go?

  • Beside the toilet, so the user can push up to stand.
  • In the shower area, to hold while stepping in and while standing.
  • Near the bathroom entrance, where the floor is often wet.

Drilling into bathroom tiles

Most bathroom walls in HDB flats and condos are tiled, and pipes and wiring are often concealed behind the tiles, especially around taps, mixers and the water heater. Holes are placed away from those runs and drilled with tile bits at low speed to avoid cracks. Accessories are fixed with corrosion-resistant screws, and the holes are sealed so water doesn't get behind the tiles.

In HDB flats, HDB limits wall fasteners to 6 mm in diameter and 40 mm in penetration depth, and restricts heavy or excessive drilling and tile cutting to weekdays between 9am and 5pm.

Common problems

Towel rack or holder is loose: screws in a wet wall corrode, or the wall plug has failed. Refixing with new plugs and sealed holes solves it. Adhesive racks keep falling: steam and humidity weaken adhesive pads quickly. Tile cracked by an earlier installer: drilling too fast, or without a tile bit, cracks glazed tiles. Grab bar needed for an elderly family member: it must be fixed into solid wall at a height that suits the user. Heavy mirror or mirror cabinet: it needs brackets or clips rated for its weight. Rusty accessories after a few months: low-grade steel rusts in bathrooms; stainless steel or aluminium lasts longer.

What the work covers

We agree the positions and heights with you, check for concealed pipes and wiring, and drill the tiles with the right bits at low speed. Each accessory is fixed with corrosion-resistant screws and wall plugs suited to the wall, then checked for level and firmness. Grab bars are tested by pulling firmly before we leave, and dust is cleared from the bathroom.
