About choke clearing

Choke clearing in Singapore starts from $80 at SG QuickFix for a simple toilet, sink or basin choke. Floor trap and shower drain chokes start from $90, manual auger clearing from $100 and powered snake clearing from $130. Deep or recurring blockages start from $150. Most chokes are cleared in 30 to 90 minutes.

Who is responsible for a choke in an HDB flat?

HDB says flat owners maintain the sanitary branch pipes in their flats, while the town council maintains the main sanitary pipes. A choke in your own sink, floor trap or toilet is usually in that fitting or in your branch pipe, so it is yours to fix. If neighbours on the same stack have backed-up drains, or waste water comes up through your floor trap when you haven't used any water, the main pipe may be choked: contact your town council.

Do you need a licensed plumber to clear a choke?

No. PUB lists clearing any blockage in a floor trap, water closet or sanitary appliance, and clearing and flushing discharge pipes, as simple plumbing work that doesn't need a licensed plumber. Replacing sanitary pipes or changing a toilet bowl is licensed work.

Common problems

Sink or basin drains slowly: grease, hair or soap building up in the bottle trap. Toilet water rises or drains slowly after flushing: a partial blockage in the toilet's trap or the branch pipe. Floor trap overflows when the washing machine drains: a choked floor trap or branch pipe that can't take the flow. Gurgling sounds from drains: air being pushed through a partly blocked pipe. Bad smell from a floor trap or sink: a dried-out trap, or waste caught in the pipe. Choke keeps coming back: a blockage further down the pipe that plunging only moves, or grease built up along the pipe. Something dropped into the toilet: an object stuck in the toilet's trap may need the bowl removed to get it out.

What the work covers

We find which fitting and which section of pipe is blocked, then clear it with a plunger, pump, manual auger or powered snake as needed. Bottle traps and floor trap gratings are removed and cleaned where they are the cause. After clearing, every affected fitting is run with water to confirm it drains freely, and the area is cleaned up.

Pricing & conditions

Prices start from $80 and depend on where the blockage is, how deep it is and the tools needed. Simple chokes are cleared with a plunger or pump; stubborn ones need a manual auger, from $100, or a powered snake, from $130. Recurring blockages start from $150, and removing a toilet bowl to retrieve an object starts from $160. Main pipe blockages are quoted after inspection. The price is confirmed before work starts.
