Quick answer
If a power socket is burnt, switch off its circuit at the DB box, unplug the appliance once cool and stop using that socket and plug. If there is smoke or flames, get out and call 995. HDB links burn marks to plugs not fully pushed in and overloaded circuits. SG QuickFix replaces burnt sockets in Singapore from $80.

What should I do if my power socket is burnt?
Cut the power to that socket at the DB box, let it cool, unplug the appliance and stop using the socket until it is replaced.
- Switch off that circuit's MCB at the DB box, or the main switch if the labels are unclear.
- Switch the socket off at its own switch if you can reach it safely.
- Wait until the plug and faceplate are cool, then unplug with dry hands.
- Take photos of the socket, the plug pins and any adaptor.
- Stop using that socket, the plug and any adaptor that was in it.
- Don't move the same appliances to the next socket; spread heavy loads out.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) advises switching off the electrical supply immediately if possible, and fighting a fire only when it is safe. Its handbook marks water extinguishers as unsuitable for electrical equipment (SCDF: Emergency Handbook 2026).
Once the circuit is off, keep it off until the socket is replaced. See burnt socket replacement prices.

Why do power sockets and plugs burn or melt?
Heat burns sockets: too much current, or a poor contact that turns normal current into heat. HDB pairs each symptom with specific causes.
| What you see | Causes HDB lists | What HDB advises |
|---|---|---|
| Burnt mark at the socket outlet | Plug is not properly inserted; overloaded circuit | Ensure the plug touches the base of the socket outlet; reduce the number of plugs used on 1 socket outlet |
| Overheated plugs, or a plug fuse that keeps blowing | Loose connection; overloaded circuit; cable is broken | Push plugs fully into the adaptor; disconnect unnecessary appliances; engage a licensed electrician to check the cable |
The table follows HDB's home care guide (HDB: Electrical accessories and wiring). In most HDB flats, the usual culprits behind those causes are:
- A kettle, air fryer, oven, iron or heater sharing one socket through a multi-way adaptor.
- Loose terminal screws behind the socket or inside the plug.
- Worn socket contacts that no longer grip the pins firmly.
- Steam from a kettle or rice cooker rising into a kitchen socket above it.
Less common: universal sockets, which the Consumer Product Safety Office (CPSO) says cannot carry a valid SAFETY Mark and, having no shutters, let plugs sit half-inserted (CPSO: Universal socket outlets). CPSO also says Schuko round-pin plugs are unsuitable in Singapore because their pins stress socket contacts, causing poor contact and overheating.
A 13A socket can supply about 2,990W (13A × 230V). A kettle or heater alone can come close to that, so two on one twin socket or adaptor can overload it.
Burning smell, hot plug or sparks: which signs matter?
A burning smell, a hot plug, marks on the faceplate or crackling all mean overheating. Switch off and have the socket checked.
Signs to act on:
- The plug or faceplate is too hot to keep your hand on. Slightly warm after long, heavy use can be normal.
- A burning, fishy or hot-plastic smell near the socket.
- Brown or black marks around the pin holes.
- Crackling or buzzing, or lights flickering when the appliance runs.
- A plug that feels loose or slips out easily.
- A plug fuse that keeps blowing, which HDB links to overheated plugs.
A tiny, brief spark when you plug in or unplug a running appliance is common. Large or repeated sparks, or sparks with a smell, black marks or a power trip, are not. Switch the socket off before plugging in or out.
Is it the plug or the socket?
Check both, because heat passes between the pins and the contacts that grip them. Pitted or blackened pins, or a melted plug body, mean the plug is damaged too.
A damaged plug can burn a brand-new socket, and a burnt socket can ruin a good plug. Have the appliance's plug and cord checked or replaced before using it again, and throw away any melted adaptor.

Can a burnt socket be repaired, or must it be replaced?
A burnt socket should be replaced, not cleaned or repaired. Heat chars the plastic and weakens the springs that grip the plug, so a repaired socket usually overheats again.
Replacing it is licensed work; see the Singapore notes and the guide on whether you can replace a socket yourself.
A typical replacement: the LEW isolates the circuit, removes the socket, cuts the cable ends back to clean copper, connects them tightly to a new SAFETY Mark socket and tests it. Brittle insulation further back may need rewiring. HDB puts PVC cable life at about 25 years, so older flats' original wiring deserves a closer look.
The breaker often doesn't trip: an MCB trips on overload or short circuit, the RCCB on leakage to earth, and a loose contact can overheat at normal current. If your power trips as well, see why power keeps tripping.
How do I stop a socket burning again?
Use SAFETY Mark plugs and adaptors, push every plug fully in, and spread heavy appliances across separate sockets.
- Buy plugs, multi-way adaptors and extension sockets with the SAFETY Mark; these must carry it to be sold in Singapore.
- Push each plug in until it touches the base of the socket, as HDB advises.
- Give the kettle, oven and heater a socket each instead of one adaptor.
- Use a fused conversion plug for 2-pin appliances; never force a Schuko plug.
- Replace a blown plug fuse with one of the same rating, never a higher one.
If one spot always needs several heavy appliances, adding a power point beats an adaptor. Whether a 15A point is worth it is covered in 13A vs 15A vs 20A sockets.
How much does it cost to fix a burnt socket in Singapore?
SG QuickFix replaces a damaged or burnt socket from $80. Each job is priced separately.
| Job | When you need it | SG QuickFix price |
|---|---|---|
| Replace damaged / burnt socket | Scorch marks, melting or a hot faceplate | From $80 |
| Additional socket (same visit) | A second socket needs replacing on the same visit | From $45 |
| Socket no-power diagnosis | The socket is dead after burning, or its MCB won't reset | From $80 |
| Circuit fault tracing | Burning keeps coming back, or heat damage runs into the cable | From $100 |
| New surface-mounted power point | You need another socket so heavy appliances don't share one | From $120 |
| Concealed new wiring | The cable inside the wall must be replaced | Site Quote |
Damaged cable and a concealed or tiled backbox raise the price. For an accurate price, send a photo of the socket, the plug pins and the appliance that was plugged in. If a dead socket needs electrical fault finding first, that is priced separately. For upgrades and new points, see power socket replacement cost and the full electrician price list for Singapore.

Power Socket Installation & Repair FAQs
No. A burnt socket that still gives power has already overheated, and the charred plastic and weakened contacts make it more likely to overheat again. Switch it off, leave it unused and have a licensed electrical worker (LEW) replace it, even if the scorch mark looks small.
A tiny, brief spark when you plug in or unplug an appliance that is switched on is common. A large or loud spark, repeated sparking, or sparks with a burning smell, black marks or a power trip are not normal. Switch the socket off before plugging in, and have it checked.
A circuit breaker (MCB) trips on overload or short circuit, and the RCCB trips on current leaking to earth. A loose or worn contact can overheat at normal current without tripping either one, which is why a smell, a hot plug or scorch marks are often the first warning.
Not usually. Most burnt kitchen sockets come from overloading or poor contact, which a new 13A socket and fewer plugs per socket fix. In HDB flats without higher electrical loading, a new 15A point or 20A aircon isolator needs an HDB permit, while extra 13A points need no permit but must follow HDB's wiring guidelines.
Look for the SAFETY Mark and its registration number on the plug, adaptor or packaging, then check the model or number at go.gov.sg/safety-mark. In Singapore, 13A plugs, socket-outlets, multi-way adaptors and extension cords are Controlled Goods and must carry the mark to be sold.
Yes. A melted plug means the plug and socket have run hot enough to soften plastic, and continued use can ignite nearby material. Stop using both, switch the circuit off at the DB box, and call 995 straight away if you see smoke or flames. Never use water on an electrical fire.
Replacing a single burnt socket typically takes 30 to 45 minutes, including isolating the circuit and testing it afterwards. It takes longer, often 1 to 2 hours, if the cable ends are damaged or the backbox needs work, and tracing a wider wiring fault is extra.
