Do smart switches work in HDB flats?

Many do, but many smart switches need a neutral wire in the switch box, and many flats don't have one there. A smart switch made for no-neutral wiring, sometimes with a capacitor at the light, solves this. The wiring is checked before installation.

Why does my light flicker after a dimmer was installed?

The dimmer is probably not compatible with the LED light, or the light isn't dimmable. Use a dimmer rated for LEDs with dimmable LED lights. Some smart dimmers also need a minimum load to work smoothly.

Why is my light switch warm or buzzing?

A warm or buzzing switch usually has a loose connection or worn contacts, which can overheat. Turn the light off, stop using the switch and have it replaced. A dimmer may feel slightly warm in normal use.

Can I replace a light switch myself?

Changing a switch means working on live wiring. Singapore's regulations require electrical installation work to be done by a licensed electrical worker, and a wrongly wired switch can leave the light fitting live even when it is switched off.

How long does it take to change switches?

A standard switch takes about 20 to 30 minutes, and each additional switch 10 to 20 minutes. Smart and two-way switches take 30 to 60 minutes, because the wiring needs checking first.

Can a smart switch be installed in an HDB flat?

Usually, but the wiring has to be checked first. Many smart switches need a neutral wire in the switch box, and many homes, including many HDB flats, have only the live and the switched wire there. In that case, choose a smart switch made for installations without a neutral, which may need a small capacitor at the light. Check that the switch supports your lights, especially LEDs and ceiling fans.

Dimmer switches and LED lights

Not every LED light can be dimmed, and not every dimmer works with LEDs. The wrong pair causes flickering, buzzing or lights that won't dim smoothly. Check that the light is marked dimmable and that the dimmer is rated for LED loads.

What is a two-way switch?

A two-way switch lets you control one light from two places, such as both ends of a corridor or the top and bottom of a staircase. If the light only works from one switch, there is usually a wiring fault between the two switches, or one switch has failed.

Replacing switches is electrical installation work, which Singapore's regulations require a licensed electrical worker (LEW) to carry out.

Common problems

Switch doesn't turn the light on: a worn switch mechanism or a loose wire, or a fault in the light itself. Switch is loose in the wall: its fixing screws or the box have worked loose. Switch sparks, buzzes or feels warm: a loose connection or a worn switch. Stop using it. Light flickers on a dimmer: the dimmer isn't compatible with the LED light. Two-way switch works from one end only: a wiring fault between the two switches, or a failed switch. Smart switch makes the light flicker or glow: the switch needs a neutral wire or a capacitor. Cracked or yellowed switch plate: replace it, especially if live parts could be exposed.
