Can a ceiling fan be installed on a false ceiling?

Yes, but the fan must hang from the concrete slab above, not from the false ceiling board. A fan hook or mounting rod is fixed into the slab, and the fan's canopy sits against the false ceiling. Fixing a fan to the board alone is unsafe, because a running fan pulls and vibrates on its mount.

Why is my ceiling fan wobbling or noisy?

  • Unbalanced blades: dust build-up or a bent blade. A balancing kit corrects it.
  • A loose mounting: the bracket, hook or downrod screws have worked loose.
  • Loose blade screws: the blades rattle as the fan spins.
  • Failing bearings or motor: a grinding or humming noise that gets worse over time.

A fan that wobbles more and more, or knocks at its mount, should be switched off until it has been checked.

AC or DC ceiling fan?

DC-motor fans use less electricity, run quietly and usually come with a remote and more speed settings. AC fans cost less and are often controlled by a wall regulator. Both are installed the same way. When a fan stops responding, an AC fan's capacitor or a DC fan's receiver is a common part to replace.

Installing a ceiling fan involves connecting it to the electrical installation, and adding a fan point is wiring work; Singapore's regulations require electrical installation work to be done by a licensed electrical worker (LEW).

Common problems

Fan wobbles: unbalanced blades or a loose mounting. Fan is noisy or clicks: loose screws, a loose canopy or worn bearings. Fan won't spin but the light works: a failed capacitor, receiver or motor. Fan spins slowly: a weak capacitor in an AC fan. Remote doesn't work: flat batteries, lost pairing or a failed receiver. Fan light doesn't work: the LED module or driver in the fan's light kit. Fan trips the power: a fault in the fan's wiring or motor.

What the work covers

We check the fan point, the ceiling and the mounting before installing. The fan hook or bracket is fixed to the concrete slab, the fan is assembled and connected, and the blades are balanced. Every speed, the light and the remote are tested, and the fan is run to check it doesn't wobble. Packaging is cleared afterwards.
