How much does it cost to replace a light switch in Singapore?

At SG QuickFix, a standard light switch costs from $70 to replace in Singapore, and each extra standard switch in the same visit from $45.

The price depends on the type. A two-way switch has an extra wire, a dimmer must suit its lights, and a smart switch must be paired with its app. If you aren't sure the switch is the fault, start with a diagnosis.

JobWhen you need itPrice
Standard switch replacementA one-way switch that is loose, sunken, cracked or deadFrom $70
Additional switch (same visit)Each extra standard switch changed in the same visitFrom $45
Two-way switch replacement or installationA light you control from two places, such as a corridor or bedroomFrom $80
Dimmer switch installationAdjustable brightness for dimmable lightsFrom $90
Smart switch installationControl by app, voice or scheduleFrom $100
Faulty switch diagnosisThe light won't work and the cause is unclearFrom $80

The additional-switch rate applies only to switches done in the same visit, so walk round the flat and list every loose, sunken or cracked switch first. A worn socket changed in the same visit is priced under the power socket service; each job is priced separately. The light switch replacement service lists what a visit covers, and other electrical jobs are in the full electrician price list for Singapore.

For an accurate price, send a photo of each switch plate and say how many rockers (gangs) it has. For a two-way light, say whether one or both switches need changing. For a dimmer or smart switch, add the product page of the model and a photo of the lights it will control.

Which light switch do you have: one-way, two-way, dimmer or smart?

Most light switches in an HDB flat are one-way; a light you can switch on from two places uses a pair of two-way switches.

Singapore uses British terms: an American "three-way" switch is a two-way here, and a "four-way" is an intermediate.

Types of light switch in Singapore homes
Switch typeWhat it doesHow to recognise it
One-wayTurns a light on and off from one placeThe only switch for that light
Two-wayControls one light from two places, working as a pairThe same light has a second switch elsewhere
IntermediateAdds a third switch position between two two-way switchesA third switch for the same light; rare in flats
DimmerAdjusts the brightnessA rotary knob or push-button
SmartControl by app, voice or scheduleA touch panel or rocker with an indicator light, paired with an app

A plate with several rockers is a 2-gang or 3-gang switch, and each gang controls a separate light or fan. Many switches sold as "2-way" in Singapore can also be wired as a one-way switch.

What makes a light switch replacement cost more?

A like-for-like swap into a sound switch box costs the least; repairs to wiring, the box or new switch positions cost more.

The starting price assumes the new switch fits the existing box and the wires are sound. These push it up:

  • Wire ends burnt or loosened by a failing switch, which need trimming or repair
  • A switch box that is cracked, corroded or pulling out of the wall
  • A new switch with a different size or number of gangs from the old plate
  • Converting a one-way light to two-way, which needs a new cable between the two switch positions
  • A smart switch that needs a neutral wire the switch box doesn't have
  • A no-neutral smart switch that needs a bypass fitted at the light

The Housing & Development Board's electrical works guidelines don't allow wiring to be embedded in walls, so any new cable in an HDB flat runs on the wall surface, usually in trunking. For new wiring, your licensed electrical worker (LEW) also submits HDB-endorsed Form CS/5H to SP Services (part of SP Group) for testing.

Every SG QuickFix switch job ends with a function test, and faceplate upgrades fall under the same service. Repairing the light fitting itself is a separate lighting job.

Why is my light switch not working?

A dead light is usually a tripped breaker, a failed bulb or LED driver, or a worn switch or loose wire, in that order.

  1. Check the DB box. If a breaker has tripped, reset it once; if it trips again, leave it off.
  2. Fit a bulb you know works, or test the old bulb in another lamp.
  3. Check whether other lights on the same circuit still work.
  4. For a built-in LED downlight with no bulb, suspect the LED driver first.
  5. If only this light is dead and the bulb is good, suspect the switch or its wiring.
  6. If the light stopped after someone replaced the switch, suspect wires on the wrong terminals.

A wrongly wired two-way switch is the usual culprit in step 6. Driver faults are covered in the guide to LED driver replacement, and the fitting is repaired under lighting installation and repair. When every light on a circuit is dead, a lighting circuit diagnosis under the electrical troubleshooting service costs from $80.

Is a sparking, loose or warm light switch dangerous?

A tiny flash glimpsed through the rocker gap at the moment it clicks can be normal. Sparks outside the plate, repeated flashes, crackling, a burning smell, a brown or melted plate, or a warm plate are not. Switch off that circuit at the DB box, stop using the switch and have a licensed electrical worker check it. The usual cause is a loose terminal or worn contacts.

Will a dimmer or smart switch work with your LED lights?

A dimmer works with LEDs only if the lights are marked dimmable and the dimmer is LED-rated; a smart switch also depends on your wiring.

For a dimmer switch in Singapore, check three things. The LED bulbs or downlights must be marked dimmable. The dimmer must be rated for LEDs, usually a trailing-edge type; some older dimmers made for halogen bulbs don't work with LEDs at all. The total wattage of the lights must sit between the dimmer's minimum and maximum LED load. Otherwise the lights flicker, buzz or won't dim smoothly. Don't mix LED and halogen lights on one dimmer.

Many smart switches need a neutral wire at the switch, and many HDB switch boxes don't have one; no-neutral models can make low-wattage LEDs glow or flicker. The trade-offs are covered in smart switches for HDB flats.

Which light switch brands can you buy in Singapore?

Schneider Electric, Legrand, MK, Hager and Clipsal are common light switch brands in Singapore; for an ordinary rocker switch, look for the SAFETY Mark.

Singapore's Consumer Product Safety Office lists the "domestic electric wall switch" as a High Risk Controlled Good on its list of Controlled Goods. The entry covers manually operated switches for household fixed wiring, and ordinary wall switches are tested to IEC 60669-1. Controlled Goods must be tested and carry the SAFETY Mark before they can be sold in Singapore, so check before you buy online. Many electronic dimmers and smart switches fall outside the scheme, so judge those on the checks above.

Most HDB switch boxes take a square British-style plate, so these brands' local ranges fit without changing the box. Match the number of gangs, and for a dimmer or smart switch, the compatibility checks above matter more than the brand.

What Singapore rules apply when you replace a light switch?

EMA says a licensed electrical worker must replace a light switch in Singapore; owners and occupiers must not knowingly hire an unlicensed person.

Singapore's Electricity Act 2001 says it is not unlawful to replace a lamp or a household-type fuse in your own installation, and section 82 reserves other electrical work for licensed electrical workers or people they supervise. The Energy Market Authority (EMA) says on Ask Gov that rewiring, repair and replacement works must be done by a licensed electrical worker, so have an LEW swap a switch. The rules are explained in the guide to replacing a socket or light switch yourself.
