Quick answer
In Singapore, a water heater that keeps tripping the RCCB usually has a worn element or water in its wiring leaking current to earth; if only its own MCB trips, suspect a short. Switch the heater off at its double-pole switch, reset the breaker once, and leave the heater off until checked. SG QuickFix diagnoses water heaters from $80.

Why does my water heater keep tripping the circuit breaker?
Most water heaters that keep tripping are leaking current to earth, usually from a worn heating element or water in the wiring. That trips the RCCB, and the whole flat goes dark.
Elements wear as scale builds up and the sheath cracks with age. At first it trips now and then; later, every time. Which switch trips, and when, tells you a lot:
| What you see | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| The RCCB trips as soon as the heater is switched on | Heating element leaking to earth, or wiring touching earth |
| The RCCB trips after a few minutes of heating | Element insulation breaking down as it heats |
| An instant heater trips only when the water runs | Element leaking; it only heats while water flows |
| Only the heater's own MCB trips; the rest of the flat has power | Burnt element shorting out, or a breaker rated too low for the heater |
| It trips, and the heater drips, rusts or smells of burning | Water getting into the heater's electrics |
| The heater is dead, but nothing in the DB box has tripped | The heater's overheat cut-out or built-in earth-leakage switch has switched it off |
These pairings follow Alpha Electric's and Joven's heater guides. If the heater simply isn't heating, see water heater not hot. Less often, the fault is a scorched or water-damaged heater switch, a loose connection or a damaged cable. If the heater is the cause, see water heater repair and replacement prices.
RCCB or MCB: which one tripped, and what does it mean?
If the whole flat lost power, the RCCB has usually tripped on earth leakage; if only the heater is off, its MCB tripped on overcurrent. HDB: Electrical accessories and wiring explains that a miniature circuit breaker (MCB) protects one circuit and trips on overload or a short circuit, while the residual current circuit breaker (RCCB) cuts electricity to the flat when it detects current leaking to earth.
In the DB box, the RCCB is usually the wider switch with a "T" test button. People also call it the RCD or ELCB, so "water heater tripping RCD" is the same fault. The heater normally has its own MCB, often labelled.
Many instant heaters also have a built-in earth-leakage switch with a test button on the unit. If that trips, read it the same way as an RCCB trip: current is leaking. For the wider picture, see RCCB tripping but not the MCB.

How do I check if the water heater is causing the trip?
Unless you smell burning or see water, switch the heater off at its double-pole switch and reset the tripped breaker once.
- Turn off the water heater's double-pole switch, usually on the wall near the bathroom door.
- With dry hands, push the tripped RCCB or MCB back up once.
- If the power stays on, leave the heater off.
- If it trips again with the heater off, the fault is elsewhere: leave it off and have a licensed electrical worker trace it.
- Don't switch the heater back on to test it.
- Note which switch tripped and when, and take photos of the DB box and the heater's label.
The common mistakes are resetting again and again with the heater on, taping a breaker up, or bypassing the RCCB. Joven's help centre says not to keep resetting or bypass it. Running a heater off a plug is also unsafe: an instant heater can draw more than a 13A socket is rated for, and CPSO says to wire any water heater through a double-pole switch, never a plug. If other circuits trip too, see why your power keeps tripping.
Who can fix it: a licensed electrical worker or a water heater technician?
A licensed electrical worker (LEW) fixes the wiring, heater switch and DB box; a trained technician or the brand's service team fixes the heater itself.
Your HDB water heater wiring, its double-pole switch, the MCB and the RCCB are electrical work that Singapore law reserves for an LEW. Inside the heater, the element, thermostat and cut-out are replaceable parts, but never a DIY job: the Consumer Product Safety Office (CPSO) says not to modify or repair a water heater on your own. If the switch or cable is scorched, have an LEW check the wiring too; HDB puts the lifespan of PVC cables at about 25 years.
Check the warranty before paying for a repair. Joven's Singapore warranty, for example, covers internal parts only in the first year or two; the later tank cover excludes the element and thermostat, and electrical faults outside the unit aren't covered.
Should I repair or replace a water heater that keeps tripping?
Repair a storage heater with a sound tank; on an instant heater, replace the leaking heating tank, or the whole heater if old or rusty.
A storage heater's element and thermostat can usually be replaced on their own. In most instant heaters, the element is sealed into the heating tank, so the fix is a new heating-tank assembly; on an older heater, a new heater is often better value. Joven puts the typical life of a water heater at 5 to 10 years. Near that age, a trip is usually the sign to replace it.
If water is also leaking from the heater or its pipes, read water heater leaking. For prices, see water heater replacement cost in Singapore, and instant vs storage water heater if you're changing type.
How much does it cost to fix a water heater that keeps tripping in Singapore?
SG QuickFix diagnoses a water heater from $80; electrical faults on the heater are priced after inspection.
| Job | SG QuickFix price |
|---|---|
| Water heater electrical fault | Inspection / Quote |
| Water heater diagnosis | From $80 |
| Water heater pipe leak repair | From $80 |
| Instant heater replacement labour | From $130 |
| Storage heater replacement labour | From $220 |
| Power trip diagnosis | From $80 |
| RCCB / RCD replacement | From $180 |
Parts, such as an element, switch or new heater, cost extra. The price rises for a heater in a false ceiling or a concealed wiring fault. Each job is priced separately. If it trips with the heater off, you need power trip diagnosis; an RCCB that fails its test needs RCCB replacement. For an accurate price, send a photo of the DB box showing the tripped switch and the heater's label, and say when it trips. See also the full plumber price list for Singapore.
Your part is switching off and one reset; the rest is for a professional.

Water Heater Services FAQs
No. A water heater that trips only sometimes is usually leaking a small current to earth, and the leak tends to grow as the element wears. The RCCB is cutting the power to protect you from a shock. Leave the heater switched off at its double-pole switch until it has been checked.
An instant water heater only heats while water flows through it, so its element is only switched on during a shower. If the element is leaking current to earth, the RCCB trips at that moment and not when the heater is idle. The usual fix is a new element assembly or a new heater.
A water heater with no lights while the DB box shows nothing tripped has usually cut itself out. Storage heaters have a thermal cut-out against overheating, and many instant heaters have their own built-in earth-leakage switch. Check that the heater switch is on, then have the cause found before anyone resets the cut-out.
No. The water heater's double-pole switch is part of your flat's fixed wiring, and Singapore requires all electrical works, such as installing wiring, to be done by a licensed electrical worker. A scorched, loose or water-damaged heater switch should be left off and replaced by a licensed electrical worker.
It depends on the brand, the part and the heater's age. Joven's Singapore warranty, for example, covers internal parts only in the first year or two; the later tank cover excludes the element and thermostat, and improper installation or electrical faults outside the unit aren't covered. Read your warranty card and contact the brand first.
A storage water heater left on during a water cut can heat an emptying tank, and dry firing can burn out the element, which then trips. Rheem's Singapore manual says to switch the heater off when the supply is cut and not to draw hot water. When supply returns, run the hot tap until water flows, then switch on.
