How much does it cost to replace a water heater in Singapore?
At SG QuickFix, replacing an instant water heater costs from $130 in labour, and a storage heater from $220. The heater itself is bought separately.
Two things set the price: the type of heater, and whether it replaces an old one on the same water and power connection. The table covers each job.
| Job | When it applies | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Instant heater replacement | Swapping an instant heater on its existing pipes and switch | From $130 |
| Storage heater replacement | Swapping a storage tank on its existing bracket and pipes | From $220 |
| New instant heater installation | A bathroom with no heater, or a heater moved to a new spot | From $180 |
| New storage heater installation | A tank where there wasn't one, with new hot-water pipes | From $300 |
| Water heater diagnosis | Not sure yet whether to repair or replace | From $80 |
| Water heater pipe leak repair | Only a fitting or pipe at the heater leaks | From $80 |
A new installation costs more than a replacement because there's no existing water and power connection to reuse. An electrical fault in the heater is priced after an inspection. See water heater installation prices for every job, or the full plumber price list for Singapore for other plumbing work.
For an accurate price, send a photo of the old heater and its model label, the heater's double-pole switch and the pipes underneath. Say whether it sits above a false ceiling, and which model you plan to buy.

Why does a storage heater cost more to replace than an instant heater?
A storage heater costs more because the tank is heavy, often high up, and has to be drained, taken down and refilled.
An instant heater is a slim box on the bathroom wall, fed by a short pipe and a switch. A like-for-like swap is mostly unscrewing the old unit, fixing the new one and reconnecting it.
A storage tank holds tens of litres. It has to be drained and lifted off its bracket, and the bracket checked for the new tank's weight. After mounting and refilling, the joints and the pressure relief valve are checked for leaks. In many HDB flats the tank sits above a false ceiling, so a panel has to come out first.
Job time follows the same pattern. A like-for-like instant heater swap usually takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, including a leak and function test. A storage heater swap usually takes 2 to 3 hours.
How much does a new water heater cost to buy?
A storage heater usually costs more to buy than an electric instant heater, and a heat-pump heater more again.
As one example, Joven's Singapore online store listed instant heaters at $138 to $268, and storage heaters at $325 for a 25-litre tank up to $465 for 91 litres, on 1 Oct 2026. Prices vary by brand, retailer and promotion.
Before you buy, check:
- The space and bracket: a bigger tank may not fit the old spot or its bracket
- The shower: a large rain shower can need more hot water than an instant heater can heat, so check the heater's rated flow
- The SAFETY Mark: electric instant and storage heaters are Controlled Goods and must carry it
- The pressure relief valve: every storage heater should come with one
- The warranty terms: some brands, such as Ariston, cover a heater only if a licensed electrical worker or licensed plumber installed it
If you're still choosing a type, see instant vs storage water heater for an HDB flat.
Climate Vouchers won't cover most replacements. From 1 Apr 2026, the Climate Friendly Households Programme accepts only 5-tick water heaters. On NEA's register on 1 Oct 2026, no electric instant or storage heater had 5 ticks; the only 5-tick models were two heat pumps. See the guide to water heater Climate Vouchers.
What extra charges should you expect?
Expect extras when the job needs new wiring, new pipes, a new bracket or ceiling access.
SG QuickFix's water heater prices cover mounting, pipework, connection to the isolator switch and a leak and function test. These commonly cost extra:
- A new double-pole isolator switch, or a dedicated circuit from the DB box, if the old connection is unsafe or not up to current rules
- New or longer pipes and flexible hoses when the new heater's connections sit in a different place
- A new bracket for a bigger or heavier storage tank
- Opening and making good a false ceiling around a storage tank
- Disposal of the old heater
Ask whether disposal is in the quote. Water heaters aren't on NEA's list of regulated e-waste, so the free one-for-one take-back that retailers must offer doesn't cover them.
A new circuit or a changed switch in the DB box is separate electrical work. See circuit breaker and DB services for those prices.
Who is allowed to replace a water heater in Singapore?
A licensed electrical worker should do the wiring, and a PUB Licensed Plumber the storage-heater pipework; only instant-heater pipe swaps are open to handymen.
On the plumbing side, the PUB plumbing works page lets a handyman without a licence replace or remove the pipe between a stop valve and an instantaneous water heater. Storage heaters aren't on that list, so have a PUB Licensed Plumber do storage-heater pipework.
On the electrical side, the Consumer Product Safety Office advises hiring a licensed electrical worker (LEW) to wire the heater during installation. The heater should connect to the mains through a double-pole switch, never an extension cord or multi-way adaptor.
When comparing quotes, ask who will do the pipework and who will do the wiring.
Should you repair or replace your water heater?
Repair a leaking fitting, valve or switch; replace a heater whose tank or casing leaks, or an older one that keeps failing.
A leak at a pipe joint, flexible hose or valve is usually a small repair, priced from $80. A heater that runs cold or trips may need only a thermostat or element, so a diagnosis (from $80) comes first. Separate guides cover the causes of a water heater leaking and a water heater that keeps tripping.
Replacement makes sense when water leaks from the tank or casing itself, or the heater is damaged. The Consumer Product Safety Office says not to use a water heater that appears damaged or is leaking. There's no official lifespan figure, but many heaters are replaced after 5 to 10 years, so a repair on an older, out-of-warranty unit is often money spent twice.

Water Heater Services FAQs
A like-for-like instant heater swap in an HDB bathroom usually takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, including a leak and function test. A storage heater swap usually takes 2 to 3 hours, because the tank has to be drained, taken down, mounted, refilled and checked for leaks. False-ceiling access or new pipes add time.
It is best not to. Connecting a water heater to the mains is electrical work, and the Consumer Product Safety Office advises having a licensed electrical worker wire it through a double-pole switch. Storage-heater pipework is also outside PUB's list of work allowed without a licence, so it needs a PUB Licensed Plumber.
Yes, in most HDB flats. Taking down the tank and capping its hot-water pipes is storage-heater pipework, so have a PUB Licensed Plumber do it. Each bathroom then needs its own instant heater, and a licensed electrical worker should check the circuit, because an instant heater usually draws more power than a storage tank.
Changing a water heater's double-pole switch is electrical work, so a licensed electrical worker should do it. At SG QuickFix, a water heater electrical fault, such as a burnt or faulty switch, is priced after an inspection, because the cause decides the fix.
There is no official figure, but many water heaters in Singapore homes are replaced after around 5 to 10 years. Storage tanks tend to fail by leaking from the tank, and instant heaters by a failed element or thermostat. An older unit that leaks or trips repeatedly is usually worth replacing rather than repairing.

Water Heater Climate Vouchers: The 5-Tick Rule Explained (2026)
Only if it has 5 ticks. Since 1 Apr 2026, Singapore's Climate Vouchers cover only 5-tick water heaters; on NEA's register (1 Oct 2026), those are two heat pumps. Instant and storage heaters don't qualify, and the official terms don't mention installation, so plan to pay for it separately. SG QuickFix replaces an instant heater from $130 in labour.

How to Clear a Toilet Choke in an HDB Flat (and When to Stop)
To clear a toilet choke in an HDB flat, stop flushing, then plunge with a flange plunger while water covers the cup. If that fails, try a toilet pump or closet auger. If the floor trap backs up or an object went down, stop and call a plumber. SG QuickFix clears simple toilet chokes from $80.
