By SG QuickFixLast updated 7 min read

Quick answer

Installing curtains you already own in Singapore costs from $60 for the first track and from $50 for the first rod at SG QuickFix, and extra tracks or rods in the same visit cost less. Roller blinds cost from $60/window. In HDB flats with concealed wiring, the no-drill strip under the ceiling often decides between a wall or ceiling mount.

What's included, and what makes the price go up?

The price covers fixing your rod, track or blind level on a Housing & Development Board (HDB) or condo wall, and cleaning up.

Supplying the rail or track is an option. Filling old holes and any new power point are separate jobs, each priced separately. The things that usually add time or cost are:

  • A ceiling mount. A ceiling-mounted track costs from $70, and is often the answer when the wall above the window can't be drilled.
  • A false ceiling or plasterboard partition. On a false ceiling the screws must reach the framing or a timber batten; on a drywall partition, drywall anchors within HDB's load limits.
  • Long or bay windows. Rails may need joining, bending or cutting to length.
  • Heavy blackout or double-layer curtains. These need extra brackets or a sturdier track.
  • Old brackets to remove. Filling the old holes is a separate wall repair and patching job; small drill or nail holes cost from $60.

For an accurate price, send one message listing every window, with a photo of each showing the ceiling line, plus the hardware you bought and the window widths.

How much does motorised blind installation cost?

SG QuickFix quotes motorised blinds per job, because the motor system and the power supply vary. Unless the motor runs on a battery, it needs a power point near the top of the window. A new surface-mounted power point costs from $120, listed under power socket installation.

An extra 13A power point needs no HDB permit, but all wiring work must be done by an Energy Market Authority (EMA) licensed electrical worker (LEW). The wiring can't be embedded in concrete slabs, beams, walls or plaster, so it runs on the surface, and your LEW submits HDB-endorsed Form CS/5H to SP Services (part of SP Group) for testing (HDB: electrical works).

Does IKEA install curtains, and what does it charge?

Yes. IKEA Singapore offers curtain and blind installation through a service provider, charged per trip and per hole rather than per window.

IKEA's customisation services page lists a call-out charge of $65 per trip, drilling at $6 per hole, and measuring at $50. Per-hole pricing adds up on long rails and several windows, because each bracket takes one or two screws. The page lists no exclusions for curtain work. IKEA's separate furniture assembly service states that it does no assembly on false ceilings or partition walls, so ask first if your window has either.

An independent handyman prices per rod, track or blind instead, and can fit hardware bought anywhere in the same visit. The furniture side is covered in IKEA assembly fee in Singapore.

What should you measure before you book?

Measure the window width, the space from the frame to the ceiling and the ceiling type; these decide the hardware, the mount and the price.

IKEA Singapore's measuring guide suggests mounting a curtain rod about 10cm above the window frame and extending it at least 10cm past each side, more if you want the curtains to stack clear of the glass when open. For floor-to-ceiling curtains, it suggests subtracting 5 to 10cm from the wall height to leave space for the rod or rail. Before booking, note:

  • The window frame width, and the width you want the rail to cover.
  • The height from the top of the frame to the ceiling.
  • For blinds inside the frame, the inner width at the top, middle and bottom. Use the smallest.
  • Anything the brackets must clear: window handles, grilles, the sill or aircon trunking.
  • Whether the ceiling is solid concrete or a hollow false ceiling. A knock usually tells you.
  • Where switches and sockets sit near the window.

Book within HDB's renovation hours; the rules are explained in HDB drilling time rules.

Will HDB's drilling rules change where your curtains go?

Often, yes: in flats with HDB concealed wiring, brackets must sit below the 150mm band under the ceiling, or go into the ceiling itself.

That band is where many curtain brackets would otherwise go. HDB's concealed-wiring sketch marks it as a no-drilling area. It also marks 150mm strips running the full height and width of the wall through every socket, switch and heater point, so nothing should be drilled directly above a switch beside the window. The strips widen to 300mm for two accessories together and 450mm for three. Ceiling drilling must not exceed 40mm in depth. HDB calls the drawing a guide only.

Partition walls have tighter limits. On Ferrolite partitions, HDB asks for no holes within 200mm below ceilings or beams (HDB: important information on renovations), and HDB's Drywall User Guide rates BTO drywall anchors at under 12kg or 25kg per point, depending on the anchor. Which walls you can drill at all is covered in can I drill HDB walls.

That leaves two usual options: brackets lower on the wall, below the band, or a ceiling-mounted track or ceiling brackets with shallow holes. Which suits your window is covered in curtain track vs curtain rod.

Can you install curtains and blinds yourself?

A light rod or blind on concrete is a fair DIY job; ceiling tracks, false ceilings and partitions suit a professional.

Check the box first. IKEA's VIDGA rail page says wall fittings and screws are not included, and gives a maximum load of 5kg. IKEA's HUGAD rod set and its BETYDLIG brackets ship without screws or wall plugs, and the TRETUR roller blind can't be cut, so measure before buying. Taobao and Shopee kits often include small, soft plastic plugs that spin or pull out of HDB concrete, so use plugs sized for masonry. Some brackets are too short to clear HDB window grilles or handles.

Space the brackets properly. IKEA specifies two VIDGA fittings per 140cm of rail, plus one for each extra 140cm. Track makers commonly place brackets about every 60cm, with the end brackets a few centimetres in from each end. Heavy curtains need more.

Safe to DIY if…Call a professional if…
It's a light rod or blind on a concrete wallThe track goes on the ceiling or a false ceiling
You own a hammer drill, masonry bit, plugs and a wire detectorThe wall is drywall or Ferrolite
The brackets sit clear of the band under the ceilingThe window is wide, a bay, or needs a rail cut or joined
The kit fits without cuttingThe blind is motorised and needs a new power point: an EMA licensed electrical worker only

The most common DIY mistakes are the wrong plugs, drilling in the band under the ceiling or beside a switch, a rail that isn't level, too few brackets, too little clearance from the sill, and an inside-mount blind that's too wide. Loose brackets and snapped gliders are usually what fail first.
