Quick answer
When power keeps tripping in a Singapore home, a DB box switch is cutting off a fault: an MCB trips on overload or short circuit, the RCCB on earth leakage. With dry hands, switch all MCBs off, reset, then turn them on one by one and leave off the one that trips. SG QuickFix diagnoses power trips from $80.

Why does the power in my home keep tripping?
A tripped switch in your DB box is cutting off a fault: an overload, a short circuit or current leaking to earth.
According to HDB, an MCB (miniature circuit breaker) trips "in the event of overcurrent due to an overload or short-circuit", and each single-pole MCB protects one circuit. The RCCB (residual current circuit breaker) cuts off electricity in your flat when it detects earth current leakage (HDB: Electrical accessories and wiring). Leakage is current escaping to earth, which can give someone a shock.
A repeat trip usually means the fault is still there: isolate one circuit, then one appliance. If that doesn't pin it down, power trip diagnosis traces it circuit by circuit.
Which switch tripped in the DB box?
Look for the lever that is down or halfway: it shows whether one circuit, leakage or the whole flat's load is the problem.
| Switch that is down | How to recognise it | What it usually means |
|---|---|---|
| One single-pole MCB | Narrow switch; only part of the flat is off | Overload or short circuit on that circuit |
| RCCB | Wider switch with a "T" test button; usually the whole flat goes dark | Earth leakage on a circuit it protects |
| Main double-pole MCB | Wider switch with no test button | The flat drew more than its rating, or a serious fault |
| Nothing is down | Corridor lights or neighbours are out too | A supply fault outside your flat |
Note which lever dropped first; resale flats often lack labels. In some older flats not every circuit runs through the RCCB, and some newer boards use RCBOs, which do both jobs on one circuit.
If nothing is down and your neighbours are dark too, report it to SP Group's 24-hour supply line on 1800 778 8888 (SP Group: 24-hour hotline). See who to call for an HDB power trip.

What causes power trips in HDB flats?
Most repeat trips trace to one appliance, one damp fitting or one overloaded circuit. When it trips tells you which.
| When it trips | Switch | Likely cause | Safe first step |
|---|---|---|---|
| As soon as you reset it | MCB or RCCB | A short circuit or earth fault still present | Unplug everything on that circuit, retry once, then stop |
| After minutes with the kettle, microwave and air fryer on | One MCB | Kitchen circuit overload | Run heavy appliances one at a time |
| When one appliance starts or heats up | RCCB | Leakage in that appliance | Unplug it and see if the trips stop |
| With nothing plugged in | MCB or RCCB | Fixed wiring, or a hard-wired water heater, aircon, light or fan | Switch off the heater and aircon isolators, then retest once |
| During or after rain | RCCB | Water in an outdoor or yard socket, light, aircon outdoor unit or cable | Leave that circuit off until checked |
| At night | Usually RCCB | Aircon fault, a fridge's defrost heater, or damp | Note what was running |
EMA and HDB say leakages are "caused by ageing or exposed wires, faulty electrical appliances, and damaged insulation" (HDB: RCCBs required in all homes). In most HDB flats the usual suspects are the water heater element, the washing machine, an old fridge, yard sockets after rain, and ceiling lights below a leak from upstairs. HDB puts PVC cable life at about 25 years, so original wiring in older flats is more prone to faults.
Separate guides cover a water heater that keeps tripping, an oven or kettle that trips the power, and why power trips at night.
How do I find the faulty circuit or appliance safely?
Switch every single-pole MCB off, reset the RCCB or main switch, then switch the MCBs back on one at a time.
- Unplug heavy appliances such as the kettle, oven and washing machine.
- Switch all single-pole MCBs to off.
- Push the RCCB, or the main switch, back up.
- Switch the MCBs on one at a time, a few seconds apart.
- When a switch trips, the circuit you just switched on is the faulty one. Switch its MCB off.
- Unplug everything on that circuit, switch its MCB on, then plug appliances in one at a time.
- If it trips with nothing plugged in, or when one appliance goes in, leave that circuit off or that appliance unplugged until checked.
If the RCCB won't stay up even with every MCB off, the fault is in the RCCB, the wiring before it, or a neutral fault a single-pole MCB can't cut off. Stop there.
Mistakes that make things worse:
- Resetting again and again while the fault is still there.
- Taping or holding the lever up.
- Fitting a higher-rated MCB so it stops tripping: it no longer protects the cable.
- Running a water heater off an extension cord: the Consumer Product Safety Office says it needs a double-pole switch wired by a licensed electrical worker (CPSO: Water heater safety).

Could the RCCB itself be faulty?
Sometimes. An RCCB that doesn't switch off when you press its "T" button may be defective, and HDB says to have a licensed electrician replace it.
HDB advises testing the RCCB monthly: switch off computers, press "T", and the power should cut; then push the lever back up. Since 1 Jul 2023, EMA requires 30 mA RCCB protection on a home's socket and lighting circuits (EMA Circular RD/E01/2023); the device is marked "0,03A".
An RCCB usually trips between half and all of that rating, so small leaks from many appliances can add up with no single faulty item. An ageing RCCB can also nuisance-trip or, worse, fail to trip; the monthly test checks this. If an electrician finds every circuit healthy but it still trips, the RCCB is the likely suspect; see RCCB tripping but not the MCB.
Replacing it isn't DIY. The Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) states that all electrical works, including installing wiring and RCCBs, must be done by a licensed electrical worker (MTI: Electrical Installations Regulations reply). Have a faulty one replaced rather than bypassing it; see circuit breaker and DB services.
How much does it cost to fix a power trip in Singapore?
SG QuickFix diagnoses power trips from $80. Repairs and parts are priced separately.
| Job | When you need it | SG QuickFix price |
|---|---|---|
| Power trip diagnosis | Trips keep coming back and you can't find the cause | From $80 |
| Appliance-related trip diagnosis | The trip follows one appliance | From $80 |
| Circuit fault tracing | It trips with nothing plugged in, or straight after reset | From $100 |
| Complex concealed wiring fault | A damp, drilled or damaged cable inside a wall or ceiling | Quote after diagnosis |
| MCB replacement | An MCB trips under normal load or won't stay up | From $120 |
| RCCB / RCD replacement | The RCCB fails its test, or trips after the circuits test healthy | From $180 |
Concealed or false-ceiling wiring and DB rectification raise the price. For an accurate price, send a photo of the DB box showing which lever is down and note what was running. See the full electrician price list for Singapore.
| Safe to DIY if… | Call a professional if… |
|---|---|
| One MCB tripped once and stays up with fewer appliances running | It trips again straight after reset, or keeps coming back |
| The trips stop when one appliance is unplugged | It trips with nothing plugged in: licensed electrical worker |
| You are pressing "T" to test the RCCB monthly | The RCCB fails its test or won't stay up with every MCB off |
| Don't swap a breaker, remove the DB box's inner cover or rewire anything yourself | You smell burning or see scorch marks, heat or water near the DB box |

Electrical Troubleshooting / Power Trip FAQs
No. HDB's RCCB FAQ says homeowners found with a faulty RCCB will not be penalised. Every Singapore home must still have an RCCB or a working ELCB (the two-year grace period ended on 1 Jul 2025), so have a licensed electrical worker replace a faulty one rather than removing or bypassing it.
No. Singapore requires all electrical works, including installing wiring and RCCBs, to be done by a licensed electrical worker (LEW). You can reset a tripped switch and press the RCCB's test button, but swapping a breaker or removing the DB box's inner cover is LEW work.
Usually, yes. If one single-pole MCB keeps tripping, leave it off and the RCCB and other circuits back on, so the rest of the flat has power while you arrange a check. Don't use extension leads from a working room to power the dead circuit's appliances.
In most HDB flats the DB box, or consumer unit, is a small panel on the wall near the main door or kitchen entrance, and the RCCB sits inside it. If you can't find the RCCB in an HDB flat, HDB says owners can call the HDB Branch Service Line on 6225 5432 for help locating it.
A circuit breaker that keeps tripping with nothing plugged in usually points to the fixed wiring or a hard-wired load on that circuit, such as a water heater, aircon, light or fan. Switch off their isolators and retest once; if it still trips, leave that circuit off and have a licensed electrical worker trace the fault.
A power trip caused by one faulty appliance is often found within about an hour on site. A fault in concealed wiring, such as a damp or drilled cable inside a wall or ceiling, takes longer to trace and is usually quoted after the first diagnosis.
