Quick answer
Who to call for an HDB power trip depends on what's dark. If a DB box switch is down, reset it once; call a licensed electrical worker (LEW) if it trips again. Whole block dark: call SP Group on 1800 778 8888. Corridor lights or lifts: call your town council. SG QuickFix diagnoses power trips from $80.

Who do I call when the power trips in my HDB flat?
A tripped DB box switch means an in-flat fault: reset it once, then call a licensed electrical worker (LEW) if it trips again. If the whole block is dark, call SP Group.
Before you touch anything, check the corridor lights, the lift and your neighbours.
| What you see | Who to call | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Your flat or some rooms are dark, and a switch in your DB box is down | Reset it once; an LEW if it trips again | The DB box and wiring are inside your flat |
| The whole block or neighbourhood is dark | SP Group, 1800 778 8888 (24 hours), then your town council's EMSU | SP handles supply interruptions |
| Your flat has power, but corridor lights or lifts are out | Your town council's EMSU line | Corridors and lifts are common property |
| Your flat is dark, nothing in the DB box has tripped, and neighbours have power | SP Group, 1800 778 8888, then your town council's EMSU | The meter sits outside your flat |
| Smoke, sparks, a burning smell or fire | Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), 995 | Fire emergency |
There is no single HDB power trip hotline. Each town council runs its own Essential Maintenance Service Unit (EMSU), and the numbers differ, so save yours from your town council's website. If the switch in your DB box won't stay up, that is a job for power trip diagnosis by an electrician.

Which switch tripped in the DB box: MCB, RCCB or main switch?
The tripped switch is the lever sitting lower than the rest: one MCB down affects one circuit, the RCCB down usually darkens the whole flat.
HDB's home care guide explains the DB box, which HDB calls the consumer unit (HDB: Electrical accessories and wiring). It holds a main switch, a residual current circuit breaker (RCCB) with a test button marked T, and a row of miniature circuit breakers (MCBs), one for each circuit.
| Switch down | What it means | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| One MCB | Overload or short circuit on that circuit | Unplug what's on it and reset once; electrician if it trips again |
| RCCB | Earth leakage somewhere in the flat | Find the faulty circuit (below); electrician to trace the leak |
| Main switch | Total load above its rating, or a serious fault | Switch off heavy appliances and reset once; electrician if it repeats |
Some breakers stop in a middle position when they trip, so the lever looks half up. Push it fully down before you reset it. For the full list of causes, see why the power keeps tripping, or an oven power trip if it happens when one appliance starts.
How do I reset a power trip safely?
With dry hands, unplug the appliances on the dead circuit, push the tripped lever fully down, then push it firmly up. Do this once.
- Dry your hands and use a torch, not a candle.
- Unplug appliances in the dark rooms and switch off the water heater.
- If one lever is down, push it fully down, then firmly up.
- If several are down, switch on the main switch, then the RCCB, then each MCB in turn.
- Plug your appliances back in one at a time, a minute apart.
- If the switch trips again straight away, leave it off. Don't reset it a second time, except for the RCCB check below.
The switch-on order in step 4 is the one SP Group gives new BTO owners (SP Group: Pre-turn-on information). If the trip returns when one appliance goes back on, that appliance is the likely cause. Keep it unplugged until it's checked.
The RCCB won't stay up: how do I find the faulty circuit?
This is the one exception to resetting once. Skip it if the box is hot, buzzing or smells of burning, or anything is wet. Switch every MCB off, then switch the RCCB on. If it drops with every MCB off, stop and call an LEW. Otherwise, switch the MCBs on one by one. The one that drops the RCCB is on the faulty circuit: leave it off, restore the rest, and have an LEW trace the leak. For more on this pattern, see RCCB tripping but not the MCB.
Should I call an electrician now or wait until morning?
Call SCDF on 995 for smoke or a burning smell, and an electrician now if the DB box is hot, buzzes or won't reset.
Otherwise, isolate the faulty circuit and wait for daylight. Once the faulty MCB is off and the rest are on, your fridge and lights usually keep running. Keep the fridge door shut. If someone at home relies on medical equipment, get an electrician straight away, and call 995 if anyone's health is at risk. Ask whether after-hours visits cost more. For the usual night-time causes, see why the power trips at night.
What not to do:
- Don't tape, wedge or hold a breaker in the ON position.
- Don't remove the DB box's inner cover, or open the meter cupboard or the corridor riser.
- Don't throw water on an electrical fire. Call 995.
- Don't swap a breaker yourself. Installing wiring and RCCBs must be done by an EMA licensed electrical worker (MTI: Written reply on electrical installations).
How much does it cost to fix a power trip in Singapore?
SG QuickFix diagnoses a power trip from $80. A replacement breaker or repair is priced separately after diagnosis.
| Job | When you need it | SG QuickFix price |
|---|---|---|
| Power trip diagnosis | The switch trips again after one reset | From $80 |
| Partial power failure diagnosis | One room or circuit stays dark | From $80 |
| Appliance-related trip diagnosis | It trips when the oven, kettle, heater or washer starts | From $80 |
| Circuit fault tracing | The RCCB drops with no appliance plugged in | From $100 |
| RCCB or RCD replacement | The RCCB fails the monthly T-button test | From $180 |
| MCB replacement | A breaker won't latch or is worn | From $120 |
| Complex concealed wiring fault | The leak is inside walls or ceilings | Quote after diagnosis |
The price rises when the fault is in concealed wiring or when an intermittent trip needs a return visit. Breaker swaps are handled under circuit breaker and DB box services. For an accurate price, send a photo of the DB box showing which lever is down, and say which rooms are dark and what was running.
Faults on the meter, the corridor riser or common-area wiring aren't part of an in-flat job: those go to SP Group or your town council. Each job is priced separately, so a diagnosis and a breaker replacement are separate items. For other electrical jobs, see the full electrician price list for Singapore.

| One switch tripped and stays up after one reset | It trips again straight away: LEW |
| You can find the faulty appliance by plugging back one at a time | The RCCB drops even with every MCB off: LEW |
| You are pressing the RCCB's T button for the monthly test | The RCCB doesn't switch off when tested, or a breaker needs replacing: licensed electrical worker |
| Never DIY: the DB box's inner cover, the meter cupboard, the riser or a breaker swap | That work is for a licensed electrical worker, or SP Group at the meter |
| Your flat has power but corridor lights or lifts are out | Report it to your town council's EMSU; there's nothing to fix at home |

Electrical Troubleshooting / Power Trip FAQs
SP Group runs a 24-hour line, 1800 778 8888, for supply interruptions. If your neighbours have power and a switch in your DB box has tripped, the fault is inside your flat. The DB box and wiring inside the flat are checked and repaired by a licensed electrical worker (LEW) that you engage.
Town councils maintain common property such as corridors, lifts and public lighting, not the wiring inside your flat. Some town councils list referral contractors for in-flat electrical jobs, but any work is a private arrangement between you and the contractor. For a trip inside your DB box, engage a licensed electrical worker (LEW).
There is no single HDB power trip hotline. SP Group's 24-hour line, 1800 778 8888, covers supply interruptions. Each town council runs its own Essential Maintenance Service Unit (EMSU) line for common property, and the numbers differ. A trip inside your own DB box needs a licensed electrical worker (LEW).
Don't open the meter cupboard or the corridor riser, or try to reset anything there. SP Group says your electricity meter sits outside your flat, on the wall or in a service cupboard. If nothing in your DB box has tripped but your flat is dark, call SP Group on 1800 778 8888 first, then your town council's EMSU line.
HDB advises testing the RCCB in your DB box monthly. Switch off computers first, then press the button marked T. The RCCB should switch off; if it doesn't, it may be defective. Switch it back on after the test, and have a licensed electrical worker replace an RCCB that fails.
No. In Singapore, electrical work such as installing wiring and RCCBs must be done by an EMA licensed electrical worker, and HDB says to engage a licensed electrician to replace an RCCB that malfunctions. Resetting a tripped switch and pressing the RCCB test button are the homeowner's jobs.
Tracing a power trip to one circuit or one appliance typically takes an electrician 30 to 60 minutes. It takes longer when the earth leakage is in concealed wiring, or when the trip happens only now and then, which can need a return visit once the fault shows up again.

Power Keeps Tripping? MCB vs RCCB and How to Find the Cause
When power keeps tripping in a Singapore home, a DB box switch is cutting off a fault: an MCB trips on overload or short circuit, the RCCB on earth leakage. With dry hands, switch all MCBs off, reset, then turn them on one by one and leave off the one that trips. SG QuickFix diagnoses power trips from $80.

Power Trip During a Thunderstorm: Normal or a Fault?
An occasional power trip during a thunderstorm in Singapore is usually normal: lightning causes a brief leak the RCCB treats as a fault. Wait until the lightning passes, unplug electronics and reset once. If it trips every time it rains, water is reaching a socket, light or cable in your HDB flat.
